How to Start and Build a SIX FIGURE Voice Over Business: Set Your VO Career on Fire!

An excellent tool
The media could not be loaded. By now, I have read thousands of books on how to start and run various types of business. Often authors will send me copies of their books before release for me to review for them. Sometimes they are great. Some of these have been real turkeys.Bill DeWees hits the nail on the head with his book How to Start and Build a 6 Figure Voice Over Business.DeWees is an MBA like me. He knows the vocabulary of the business world, but he does not overwhelm his readers with a bunch of technical mumbo-jumbo jargon. Many authors try to impress their readers with how much jargon they can throw into a book. Bill DeWees does not do that.Instead, he writes a clear, concise book about not only how to locate jobs, but also how to manage the day-to-day marketing tasks of how to start your voice over business.I am not a voice over talent. I am not seeking to be one. However, my two daughters are. I purchased this book to gain a little insight into the industry so that I could help them manage their business. There are points where DeWees repeats himself in this book. He tells us at least twice about how to make a click on the recording when a mistake is made so it can easily be found to edit it. This is not a real problem. I have read books where the author repeats quite a few things just to get a few more pages into the book. I do not think this is the case.In this book, the reader will learn a few tricks of the trade and some common mistakes that beginners make. DeWees also tells his readers why some very well-known voice over talent is not making as much as they should out of the voice over business. In my opinion, Joe Girard;s book How to Sell Yourself should be read along with this book. I think with the two a person who is wishing to market their voice over business will learn most of what they need to know about marketing themselves.I would like to have read a little more about the proper type of microphones and other equipment. Over all, though, I have to rate this book as an excellent read.David E. McClendon, Sr.Your Redneck MBABook Review PolicyMy policy on book reviews is to give you my honest opinion of the book. From time to time publishers will give me a copy of their book free for the purpose of me reading the book and writing a review. The publishers understand when they give me the book that I am under no obligation to write a positive review. If you will look at all my reviews, you will see that there have been occasions when I have written a negative review after having been given a book.I often provide links to books on Amazon.com where you can purchase books and help support the continued operation of this blog. Very good information for aspiring VO talent
First, realize that as the author states, this is a transcript of a podcast or webinar or something to that affect. This is not a professional level, edited, ebook; HOWEVER, the content is VERY good. I actually struggled to put it down and to some extent enjoyed the transcripty style. It seemed to retain a more personal feel (like Bills videos) than your standard "how to" book. This kindle covers a lot of ground relative to breaking into VO. Bill uses his experience to help guide prospective VO talent down a winning path to their own business. I learned something in every section that will help me a great deal. There were a couple work flow tips that will save me 100's of times the cost of this kindle. What I like most is that Bill Dewees really does a good job of sort of engraving in your mind whats required to be successful in VO. He makes it clear; no magic, no short cuts, lots of work, and a great career if you can be persistent.Sections include:office toolsstudioworkfloweditingdemo'swebsitemarketingcollectingratesunion vs non-unioncustomer serviceand moreIf you are aspiring to break into VO or are a VO talent that is finding that you are not growing your business then this kindle is a great place to start.TLDR: Fast, easy read, with LOTS of great information about success in Voice Over work. Numerous typos and transcript style. Worth every penny.

Bill Dewees is De-best
I have got Bill on my LinkedIn and have spoken to him. I’m hoping to get the money together to have some lessons from him privately! He’s that cool! His book is rare, there are tons of books and YouTube videos out there about the performance and tech usage when it comes to Voiceover, voice acting, audiobook narration. Loads. I’ve found one that actually teaches you how to market yourself so you can actually do it as a business. I’ve followed the teachings of this book and got work from it! I now have repeat customers as a result of his teachings. Yes, watch YouTube (Bill is on there too) yes do acx university (it’s free) yes read the instruction manual of your DAW (go on, I dare you… I actually printed mine out and did lol… I love reaper) but the business side is here! You need this book! This is an industry of friendships, so get ready to make them and nurture them. And a personal message to Bill, this is Antony Parton on LinkedIn, thank you once again for being so supportive and approachable! You’re the best dude! X

One of the best books on marketing a voice over brand
Bill isn't afraid to go against the crowd and it shows by his online presence and real world performance. His efforts are clearly rooted in relentless marketing that are outlined in simple instructions that anyone can follow. His honest candor about the importance of conversational style is crucial. This book, in my view, is therefore one of the finest primers and resources on marketing for those involved in the voice acting industry. If you buy one book on voice over or audio book narration, make it this one.
