The Film Book: A Complete Guide to the World of Cinema Hardcover – April 1, 2021

The old saying goes, "You get what you pay for." Contrary to this expression, there's also an expression which is one of my all time favorites, "Great things come in small packages." That's exactly what this item is. This is a Christmas gift for my brother whose a screenwriter and knows just about everything there is to know about film, and this will be a great reference, nonetheless, 'just in case there are a few things he doesn't yet know.'Came shipped in with two other gifts, but was wrapped well enough in foam wrapping. The collection is rather impressive from what I was able to see of it. The case is one of the more impressive features, being (out of steel/metal), whatever you wish to call it, which gives the book that "old-style reel look." I was originally going to purchase this at a mall book store, but they were sold out.Great thing about this collection, what I've heard from reviews that is, that this collection is really worth what the inexpensive cost is. I'm not one to judge from an entertainment-industry point of view, but as the brother to one who is, I believed it is most likely a great gift, especially with the references. Maybe he'll even allow me to borrow it from time to time.

I was most interested in the last section titled Must See Movies. I read that first. Then worked my way back to the beginning! I appreciated the attention to film as a global phenomenon - not just a Hollywood history (though of course, that's a substantial part of the book). I recommend for people interested in knowing more about film, without getting into academic details. What I like best about this book is that you can open up to any page and read the info. It's meaty but short with lots of wonderful photos to illustrate and make you want to see so many films - often films you forgot about and would like to see again!

Nice hard cover book, glossy print, informative, but a bit disappointed it did not come with the metal box mentioned by another reviewer.

This is a WONDERFUL book! Smaller in size than I imagined, but packed with great pictures and information! It definitely impressed us! THIS IS A GOOD ONE!

A good gift for movie buffs!

It came in a film canister liked tin box and the book cover is a photo of vintage film. The contents of the book are divided into 6 sections, as the following:1. The Story of Film: The history of film since 1895 to present and timeline2. How Movies are Made: Pre-production, Production and Post-production3. Movie Genres: Western, Musical, Comedy, Action, Animation etc.4. World Film: International movies from around the world, such as India’s Bollywood5. A-Z of Directors: Profiles of 100 of the world’s best movie directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock6. Top 100 Movies: The most influential movies of all time, such as King Kong, Gone with the Wind etc.Btw, the contents are previously published in “Eyewitness Companions: Film”. If you already have that book, you don’t have to get this one because it’s basically the same with some new photos. Anyway, this book is recommended for film lovers and DK book collectors!

It comes in a clever and protective metal box, as if it actually contained a reel of film. This used book was in pristine condition, better than the seller described. I was (again) disappointed it did not contain more of the classic films being shown on TCM and AMC, Having purchased several books of this type, I realize no one book can possibly encompass all the films we may want to find. This book is an excellent addition to those I have of this genre. Gaps within each book are filled in by others. I've learned not to expect one book to have it all, and am pleased to have several excellent books to reference. This is one of them.

Good book, worth the price
