"Akira's Hip Hop Shop" is a romantic comedy about a Japanese guy (James Kyson Lee, "Heroes") with a jones for rap music who falls in love with a Black girl (Emayatzy Corinealdi, "The Young & The Restless") with a passion for culinary arts. Loved it!
This was a great movie! I stumbled across it by accident and it's so different from anything I've seen. I was recently reading a book about the way in which Asian men are portrayed in mainstream Hollywood movies; you know, the typical stereotypes and one-dimensional-ality of their characters. Sadly, these stereotypes affect the general public that views such movies and these myths about Asian men being asexual or martial artists are taken as reality by many. Before seeing this movie, I couldn't think of a single movie where the Asian man played in a leading romantic role. The only other movie I could think of where an Asian man was paired with a Black woman in a sort of romantic way was "Romeo Must Die," (Aaliyah and Jet Li) but that's it. We definitely need more movies that show diverse interracial relationships. The director chose great actors for the roles. It was romantic and the comedy fell in just the right places. James Kysun Lee did a great job (I think he's so fine btw!) and his chemistry with Emayatzy was wonderful! I read the director wants to make this into a feature film, which I think would be soooo awesome. Hopefully, those in Hollywood won't shy away from this film. We need more diverse characters instead of movies that continue to uphold the status quo and stereotypes.

Love it
I love this little movie. I don't get to see interracial couples on film that often. This was an unusual pairing but the actor and actress have good and believable chemistry. I think the actress is so pretty. The guy is pretty good looking too. I thought her reason for stepping back from him was a little flimsy but I could actually see someone her age doing that if her friends were in her ear too much. At the same time, the stepping back allowed them to grow a little, get themselves situated, grow up. I liked the girl. She was nice, laid back, and open-minded. I liked the guy because he was a business man without being obnoxious. He called his parents and he was a decent guy. I also liked that he didn't get all macho when her boyfriend was acting like a jerk. He had class. I wish this movie was longer.

Please Sir I'd Like Some More!
So very refreshing! I loved this so much! Where to start... First off, how cool is it to see a Korean leading man!!!! Jason act's his behind off too. His leading lady is a great and gorgeous actress. The story was complete and left me hungry for more. Secondly, I love seeing romances from any marginalized ethnic group just because it's so unjustly rare. But a Korean leading man (playing a Japanese man) and an African American leading lady ....WHAT!?!? They had mad chemistry and the love story was about two people feelin' each other and that transcended the IR subplot. I want more please. I almost can't get over the fact that a movie portrayed an Asian man as a sexy, whole man and not the typical crazed evil master mind or martial arts eunuch. Finally, it was plain entertaining. Definitely worth the rent or the purchase.

Wanted more of a story!
Was so anxious to see this movie, but the ending was flat I felt the writer and director had more to say but ran out of money? Or I hope that was it, really good young actors and this will become more of a story with the World becoming more globally aware of different cultures. Also it brought up a lot of the reality which is family continuity and family background is very important to the Asian community. Also most of these relationships might be very short and painful if you are expecting long commitment or marriage. Think hard about the consequences.

I like the idea of Japanese fusing with hip hop culture
I like the idea of Japanese fusing with hip hop culture. I wish more Asian guys would get together with black women. I think they are really cute together. I also like how they had Japanese language in it and how Japanese people view black girls. The movie had authentic Japanese culture and people. The main guy, Akira was kinda cute too. But the movie was very low quality. I wish it was longer too. You could tell this movie was made by some low level director. Although I love the idea, I hate the way it was made.

AM/BF Love Story
Being in an AM/BF relationship myself I was really intrested in seeing what kind of take this film would have. It was totally cute. I like how the stereotypes were...rebuttled for lack of a better word. The characters were well rounded and it was a joy to watch.I only wish the movie was longer with more detailed character background and of course what happens after the fariy tale ending. what other difficulties did the couple face and how they were able to deal or not deal with them...that sort of thing. Other than that I thought it was super cute. I'm glad I purchased it and it's a happy additon to my dvd collection.James Kyson Lee is hot.

Very insightful
I really liked this short film. Despite it being short it overall was a good one. There aren't enough films that portray Asian men and African American women. I am an African American women dating an Asain man and it was refreshing seeing this film. It shows the many aspects of interracial dating. Especially when people don't noramlly see this. Thanks for making this film. I'd like to see many more like this one.

Loovveed it!!
This movie is perfect...I love a good interracial romance story. And these actors definitely played it well. They had it down pack! I hope I can see another movie with these two, or something like it at least. You dont get to see alot of genuine AMBW romance stories out there. Coming from a place where I've seen many AMBW couples, I know its real and I would like to see more of a positive representation of that coupling in the media. Those couples are out there, and representation is always a good thing :)
