Best gut health book I've read!
This is the best gut health book I've read; and I've read a bunch! Clearly explains different functional gut issues and how things get out of balance. Describes the effects of different gut issues and imbalances and how they can effect your body, multisystemically. Describes the gut-brain connection. Also provides clear recommendations for how to recover your gut health, including recommended tests to help discover the root problem, targeted supplements and herbal medicines to help address issues, and recommended diet changes, as well as recipes for the happy gut diet. I only got halfway through the book and I was finding it so helpful that I grabbed a highlighter and went back to reread chapters and highlight the parts that seemed specific to my issues. I've been to a number of doctors and have only got useful and helpful bits of info here and there. I feel like this book helps me understand my issues much better, which helps me take control of my own health and also arms me for discussing these issues with my doctor and asking for specific tests, rather than hoping he/she will know enough about gut health to order the appropriate tests. I've been to probably ten different doctors and some have been more helpful than others, but they were all missing something. This book is helping me fill in the blanks. What a great reference! I'm so glad I bought this book!

MUST READ if you have stomach issues!!
Happy Gut answered so many questions, gave such advice and was full of information. I have suffered with all types of gastro issues for over 30 years and have seen specialists all over the country. I stopped at nothing to get answers to what I was dealing with and while many Drs. were able to help a little, I never had a REAL answer that worked. Having found the Happy Gut book through and article in the NYTimes... i was hooked. It's not an easy program, but it's also not a forever program. Everyone is different. For me, one who loves sweets, gluten, pasta, cheese etc. this was a big commitment, but one I was willing to take. I knew if I didn't do something for myself that was dramatic, nothing would change. I was willing to do ANYTHING to feel better and get my quality of life back. I read the book, committed to the program 100% and after just 28 days felts so much better. I am now about 60 days out and feel 80% better and have lost 20 pounds. While I did need to lose weight, that is the icing on the cake! Feeling better has been so much more than I could have expected. Thank you Dr. Pedre... you have done more for me in a short time thank most did for me over years.

Great info. Working for me.
I did not identify with some parts of the book, as I have no overt ailments - gastro or otherwise. But I figured, if it helps those that do, it should be good for me. I ask, "If it makes someone with ailments healthier, how healthy would it make me?" I like to experiment. How will I feel after 30 days on this plan?I'm 20 days in, and have lost the only 10+ pounds I had to lose (most of that in the first 6 days). I've heard that the last 10 is the hardest to lose, and that's all I had, and it came off quick. OK, I'm just gonna say it - my poops are amazing. Nice clean sinkers, usually one safety wipe, and done. This is the most drastic difference I see, not having any overt ailments , allergies, or food sensitivities at all. At 50+ years old, it does seem that I recover a bit quicker from my jogs, and am slowly adding weekly mileage - it seems a bit easier than last year - not sure if this is due to the 10+ lb. loss, or perhaps less post-run joint swelling. Both?Oh, the other dramatic difference is how I approach eating, and food, and hunger. I have been a junk food junkie all my life - potato chips are (were) like crack. Pie/cake/cookies? YES. But having quit the subtly addictive foods listed in the book, I no longer crave them. and I just don't NEED to eat as much. I don't feel like I've had to use a whole lot of "will power" to do this. Just decide, then do.To ramp up and start, you probably need 2 weeks (if quick study, highly motivated), perhaps 4 weeks if you work full time, have other responsibilities - to read the book, start sourcing the stuff - I use local health food stores (Whole Foods, etc) and iHerb.com to buy everything. I have routine down now to premix most of the smoothie stuff on Sunday, for the next 2 weeks, and so it only takes around 10 minutes each morning to make.If you're fairly healthy but just want to improve, this is great. If you have ailments, I can only imagine how much better you'd feel on this diet. The approach used to then determine exactly what your particular body needs after the first 30 days is spot on, very methodical and scientific.

Lost a stone and feel great
Decided to have a go at this a couple of months ago. I cut out processed sugar, alcohol, dairy, wheat / gluten and other foods on the banned list, including potatoes and fruit (other than berries). It probably sounds like hell, but when you look at the foods you can eat, things look a lot brighter. You can have a steak and sweet potato chips for example, not to mention your fill of veg, wild fish and certain types of nut. I did the month and felt marvelous. I shed almost a stone without once feeling hungry, got rid of the energy crashes I'd been experiencing and also started waking up without the aches and pains I'd previously put down to 'age'. Better still, I haven't gone back to the sweets, biscuits and bread since. I'm still following the plan, albeit with a couple of glasses of wine or cider per week. I feel way too good to give that feeling up! If you want to feel better and / or lose weight, this is a very good book to buy.
