Cartridge upgrades may be tricky
I like this turntable for all that it is. I do not use the internal preamp. I run it through a vintage Technics SA-500 receiver and out to four vintage Advent model 1s. My turntable shipped with an unbranded, presumably AT cartridge so I wanted to upgrade it to an Ortofon Red. The Red cartridge is heavier and it proved difficult to zero with the counterweight supplied. The instructions tell you that you should turn the counterweight until it attaches to the tonearm, but it seems to me that there is a point at which the counterweight “clicks” into place. No problem, but that point is already just a little too far up the tonearm to properly zero-balance the cartridge. My solution, which has been adequate so far, is to compensate by setting the tracking force a little lighter than that recommended by Ortofon. Otherwise, a very nice bang-for-the-buck table.

Great turntable! Having issues? Read this...
To those who have sound issues, read this!!! After reading several negative reviews on this and other turntables, I had to say something. First, This is a great turntable for a normal person looking to get into vinyl, or resurrect your old vinyl collection. This 400s is a nice, solid turntable that looks and sounds great just the way it is. Solid components, simple features, and a sound that is beyond its minuscule price tag that will satisfy 90% of folks out there. For the other 10%, you're probably looking at $900+ pieces. Anyway, If you're new to turntables and are having sound issues, it's probably one or both of these things. 1. Set the arm weight lower! Your needle should just barely touch the record when you lower the arm. You changer this by adjusting the weight at the rear of the time arm. 2. Turn the pre amp on or off. No sound, turn it on, distorted sound, turn it off. I hope this helps someone get the most out of this or another turntable. Happy spinning!

Beautiful Turntable with Some Issues
This turntable looks great but there are some issues with setup. I followed the instructions carefully but noticed that my vinyl records would pop and skip. In order to correct this, I was constantly attempting to adjust the skate and counterweight as indicated in the instructions. At one point I became frustrated and emailed Teac customer service (which was difficult to find) after playing a record that sounded flawless on an older lower quality turntable. That was 2 1/2 months ago and I still have not heard back from Teac. As my time for returning the unit had passed, I eventually purchased the Neoteck Digital Turntable Stylus Force Scale Gauge listed here on Amazon in hopes that using that to set the counterweight might help my problem. My vinyl sounds so much better since doing so and it turns out that the dial on the counterweight was off by as much as .4 grams! While the vinyl sounds much better now the problems I encountered with initial set up coupled with the lack of support from Teac makes this very hard to recommend. If you have another way to measure the counterweight then this turntable will sound great. If not, expect to have to buy a gauge or spend several frustrating hours attempting to set the counterweight according to the instruction manual.

Belt is better for recording from.
I like it but my 40 year old Pioneer PL 115D still sounds better. There is more noise transferred thru the table than my 40 year old turntable. You can't touch anything once it is running. My old turntable is completely silent; you can kick the desk it is on. However: tThere is no motor noise like there is on the newer direct drive turntables I have tried and returned; including 2 of the most popular reasonably priced Audio Technica model.

Very good for the price
This is a nice turntable. On paper it does not match my old 40-year old pioneer belt drive, but I am really happy with it.
