Yakudoshi: Age of Calamity
I**U
pulp crime thriller
Yakudoshi starts out similar to the "Tattoo", not a lot of plot but more a slice-of life Honolulu seen from a man just out of prison - the nightlife young druggy Honolulu, this time set in the mid 2010's. It's only after the halfway point when I realized "Oh I get it, this supposed to be a straight up crime noir thriller." Then it gets very noir plot - feels like too much crime thriller plot is squeezed into the last third of the book when it could have been spread more evenly. But a great job capturing the Honolulu underbelly after the sun sets. Also glad McKinney doesn't hold back in letting the protagonist narrator be non-PC (just like a character like this would not be). Quick read.

Needed night vision goggles
Chris McKinney has written another travel guide to a dark corner of Hawaii. I've enjoyed all of his books. He rises above the crime noire genre. The pace is fast and the paths are circuitous. This story is about a recently released prisoner who discovers that his son is missing and his search to find him. Fans of Ken Bruen and David Zeltserman as well as those who want to know more about the seamy side of Hawai`i are likely to appreciate this author.

Fast Read
I love all of Chris McKinney's books. They are gritty and don't hold back from telling the real stories of Paradise.

Real Hawaii
I have read all of Chris McKinney's books. I will always try to read new ones, as they are published. I appreciate the recommendation of Mr. McKinney to read "Hawaii" by Mark Panek. It is important for me to understand a place that I visit and these books help me to see more of Hawaii than just the tourist side.

What will Bruce do
A little different than his earlier books but still good. The author does an excellent of revealing a side of Hawaii few visitors ever are exposed to. It is so easy to forget that Hawaii is like any big city and yet because of who lives there and the fact itโs an island the problems Hawaii has are in some ways unique, and this author does an excellent job exposing this to the reader.

Once again Chris Mckinney delivers another awesome read in Yakudoshi
Once again Chris Mckinney delivers another awesome read in Yakudoshi. I've read all of his previous books and this once continues to amaze. It took me only 2 days to read. His tale about a ex-con coming out of prison after doing a 9 year stint comes home to face a new hawaii along with facing his dark past that sticker haunts him today. Mckinney takes you thru the Hawaii bar/drug scene filled with corruption, deception, lies, murder etc. If you're a fan of his previous books this will not disappoint.
