A great story, well told!
I read several books a month but rarely Westerns. That exception may be history after devouring first THE BIG DRIFT and now DEAD MAN'S BOOT. I accept the testimony of others that Dearen's books are scrupulously researched, in part because they have an authentic ring. More importantly, the writing is fresh and winning. Best of all, his stories have compelling characters the reader cares about, fascinating plots, and consistent narrative momentum. I will definitely continue to read his works and heartily recommend this one.

Fascinationg Plot
The landscape west of the Pecos is still brutal these days, but imagine riding there not on a 4 wheel drive vehicle but on horseback. Mr. Dearen has, and created a fascinating and historically accurate account of a Guadalupe legend.

Deeper than Zane
The published review does a very adequate job of plot summary. But this is not your typical Zane Grey style western novel. It has the normal elements and plenty of action, but throws in some twists consisting of personality disorders and character faults. Are they fleeing their demons, or are they searching for redemption? Or both? It is worth reading to find out.

An Excellent Book!
This is one of those books I couldn't put down. I am from Texas and am familiar with the story of the lost Sublett Mine in the Guadalupe Mountains which part of the storyline draws from. Aside from that it is an excellent character driven story that kept me interested from the first page to the last.I recommend this story highly.

A good Western
A predictable story but the kind of story many Western readers will enjoy. Excellent description of a rugged country and it's fauna. An easy book to enjoy and continue reading. Christian beliefs were include in the story. This was refreshing and surprising.

The book was very entertaining. It had clearly defined characters and plot lines and a dramatic conclusion. The plot lines are gradually revealed and come together in a natural way. The action takes place in the early days of settling the Pecos and extends to the Guadalupe Mountains. My enjoyment was further enhanced because I had a good working knowledge of the area.

Dead Man's Boot
If you are a fan of Elmer Kelton, you will love this book. I am going to read it again just to see if I missed anything. Patrick does an excellent job of making you feel what the characters are experiencing. Very good book. Now I need to read the rest of his books.

Dead Man's Boot; Very Entertaining Read
Patrick Dearen's "Dead Man's Boot" is way up there with his Spur Award book last year, "The Big Drift." Patrick has walked over the setting for his books. This is one of those books that you don't want to put down once you start reading.-Norman Wayne Brown, Author for True West Magazine and books on the western history.
