Morningstar Tristar Remote Meter-2 (TS-RM-2) - Connects via 30m Cable to Tristar PWM/MPPT Solar Controllers to Display System Info, Logged Data, Graphs, Alarms & Faults Troubleshooting - 5 Languages

Works great and am happy with it. I just wish they would have added an incoming voltmeter to the sensors. I have three 36 volt nominal panels connected in series giving a theoretical 108V DC in perfect sunlight. To check this voltage I have to pull the maxi blade fuse and test it with my volt meter. Would be nice to see it with a touch of the button.

I bought the TS-RM-2 meter by accident, to me the labelling was not clear on which solar controller models were supported. Morningstar tech support quickly advised me that only the RM-1 meter will work after I failed to make it work with my solar controller. Amazon quickly issued me a return authorization. Next, StellaVolta, the retailer for Morningstar, refused to issue a return authorization because the package had been opened, even though the meter was never used and all parts and paperwork were to be returned. I made a mistake that cost me $135 US. Be wary of your transactions with these sellers.

I placed the combiner box, charge controller, battery bank, and power inverter inside the garage where all components are easily accessible. I wanted to have a remote meter placed inside our home to be able to keep an eye on data coming from the solar setup, so bought the Morningstar TS-RM-2 digital meter to have easy access to the data. I bought the connector cable (RJ-11) nearly 95 feet long to make the connection from the charge controller to the meter. I made a cedar box to place the meter onto and have it sitting on a small table next to a recliner chair where I sit when relaxing for easy access and to check data readings. The RJ-11 cable was about 94 feet long so when routing it I gathered the excess cable and zip tied it and hid it behind the table where all of the solar components are installed. I like having the meter inside so I don't have to go to the garage and check data readings. The meter is plug-and-play and comes with an easy to understand manual. It has back lighting so if it's dark you can depress a button and easily see data readings. I'd buy this meter again whether it be installed on the charge controller or as a remote meter.

Nicely compact. Easily installed. Adequate instructions provided you read and practice until it (quickly) becomes obvious what the charts mean. Lots of useful information available. Nice backlite. Yellow arrow buttons take a little getting used to as they don't feel like clickable buttons at all, but once I got used to their feel they worked ok if occasionally erratic. If unit is in standby then any of the buttons when pushed will activate the unit after which the next button pressed will actually perform its function. No problem as long as you know this is how it operates (it is in the instructions). Definitely recommend this meter.

This thing is annoyingly overpriced (mostly because you are paying for 100' of telephone wire). It uses the exact same electronic pcb as the one that mounts on the tristar unit, but this version costs so much more. I was stuck buying it because I wanted the remote display. Overall it does its job well, the rubber keys stick easily, but most of the time it is just displaying solar output in real time, the only time you need to mess with the buttons and menu trees is to check history (ie last 30 days of solar output logged).

The remote was easy to connect and displays the most important information at a glance. Works well with the Tristar MPPT 60.

Morningstar is a great product, I was unable to return the unit due to the Amazon return policy deficiencies. I am now working with a different distributor of Morningstar.
