Our first time using the mixer, my daughter and I followed the chocolate chip recipe from the product manual. We followed the instructions exactly from ingredients to mixing speeds. The flat beater began hitting on the side of the mixing bowl initially, then the whole bowl dislodged and came flying out at us. I tried readjusting the bowl and restarting the mixer only to have it happen again. The mixer shook so violently that the kitchenaid symbol fell into our cookie dough. I had to throw all of our cookie dough away because if it. I expected better for the price. Disappointed. UPDATE: I happened to see a Kitchenaid Artisan on display at a department store. I tried adjusting the mixing bowl and trying to handle it while attached to see if it would detatch. To my surprise, it only attached securely in one position. The handle has to be near the back of the motor, almost hitting the side. I got home and readjusted my bowl. I also looked my problem up online and read about the dime test. I tried the dime test and found that my beater to bowl ratio was already correct. Great! I then decided to try the cookie recipe again, this time I only used half of each ingredient that the book recipe called for. Once again, I followed the recipe EXACTLY. I even timed the mixing with a kitchen timer. I had no problems whatsoever. My cookies were delicious. So, I've increased my rating to 2 stars. I will try to a simple cake recipe next along with the buttercream icing and update my review again. UPDATE: I've decided to increase my rating to 5 stars. I did make the cake and it turned out beautifully. I've since concluded that my initial issue was because of handling mistakes on my part. I am leaving this review to show my personal thought progression. This is my very first stand mixer, I bought it on my own, and it is an honest and true evaluation. Please enjoy your stand mixer and if you are considering whether to buy one or not - you won't be sorry with this one.

Heavy, commercial quality mixer, as one with expect with KitchenAid. The stainless steel bowl leaches steel when washing, it turns the towels gray. Not sure how this is healthy, but I read in an online forum to clean it with vinegar, and that does help get rid of some of the leaching. We bought the espresso color. I was not impressed with the color when we received it. It looks more like poop brown instead of espresso. I wasn't about to return this heavy beast though, so in 20 years we will laugh about the color being outdated, but at least I know it will last that long! Also, I have yet to get any rebate back after following instructions perfectly and within the deadline. ($50 rebate from kitchenaid advertised on amazon during the holidays.) It's been a little over a month since submitting the rebate, so it may still arrive... someday.

bought one for my wife, she was very happy so i am happy. she raved about it so much that the daughter had to have one too, so it was an easy decision what to get her for christmas! she too is quite pleased with the one i got her, and that counts even more as she uses it much more than my wife. so, i bought 2 of them as gifts and both parties liked them a lot, and i thought the price was better than comparable ones i saw elsewhere, so i think it's a good value too.

***Update** After three months of owning this and 10 or so cookie batches later, it is grinding and screaming in the mechanism like there is no grease. This is our 2nd one in 1.5 years. I've lost my faith in this brand now. Save your money and buy another cheaper mixer. *** This isn't my first Kitchen aid and I'm sure it won't be my last. The color is wonderful and it was shipped very quickly. I did have to adjust the beater clearance right out of the box, but that was easy to do. My whisk was a bit bent up, but I was able to bend them back to almost original position. Other than that I love it! Well worth the $$
