How long does it steam?

The answer is dependent on several factors that are not specified in the question. The fog emitting screen openings are variable and affect the amount of steam emitted, thus the duration of steam emitted. The measuring cup that comes with the unit holds about 100 ml (I think) while the unit is rated at 218 ml/hr. Thus a person would expect about 1/2 hour of steam. Actually, I have never timed my unit nor run it dry (auto shutoff).

Does it have a plastic smell when it’s on?

Not that I have experienced. It's does steam my sinuses. It's a decent face steamer but not the best.
