Pirate Potty

Teaches children about secrets, not developmentally appropriate
This book is very cute and the pirate hat and stickers are very effective. However, the last page tells the child to "not tell anyone, it's a secret." This is highly inappropriate language in a book geared towards this age group. For children's own safety they should not be taught about secrets. Especially in a book about toilet training, which brings more awareness to private areas. My son learned to say "don't tell anyone" from this book and it was very upsetting to my husband and myself when he repeated it to us. Luckily we were able to trace that phrase to this book, but this phrase should absolutely not be taught to children.

This book worked for me!
Potty training has been tough. I started late with my son, 3.5 years olds to be exact. He is speech delayed and I tried everything. Nothing was working. I tried every bribe out there.I event tried the underwear approach and let him feel his mess. That didn't work either. I got discourage listening to other parents tell me how their kiddo got it down in three days. I listened to doctors and therapists tell me he just isn't ready. As the months passed I started to panic internally because kindergarten is not far away and he HAS to be fully potty trained and I was not getting anywhere. So I bought this book and a bunch of other potty books. Since my son loves me reading to him I thought I would give this a try. HOLY HELL, it has helped. He loved this book(and others) and I was getting results immediately. He actually started peeing in the toilet. I am bewildered with how potty books have actually helped. Try it. Like everything, it works for some and not others but it's a really cute book that you can't go wrong purchasing. The other books that contributed to his sucess are: Big Boy Underpants, Bloop Bloop goes the Poop, Where's the PooP?, Everyone Poops, and Even Firefighters go to the Potty. My son pees and poops in the toilet. Yes, we still have accidents but from where I started it is all success. Good Luck!

Great potty aid that rewards without sweets
When I was potty training my daughter I found she knew when she needed to pee, but didn't seem to get why she would want to use the potty for it. We tried mini-marshmallows as an incentive, but didn't really like the idea of a sugary treat as a reward. This book seemed to solve that problem.Pros:1. Cute story. My daughter loves finding the details like the juice boxes in the celebration page and makes up her own stories around the details.2. Who doesn't love telling stories with a pirate voice?3. Stickers: My daughter could pick out a reward sticker each time she was successful on the potty and place them on her (included) pirate hat herself.4. Pirate Hat: Cute idea (but also a con)Cons:1.Pirate hat. Very fun idea, but since its just a paper/card stock hat its a bit flimsy. She mostly didn't wear it (maybe wore it 3 times). We just left it with the book by the potty. Not enough of a con to take away a star.Loved it!

Cute and entertaining with built-in reward system
2 year old loves this book. He's my third kid, so I already owned about 5 other potty books, but he was not very interested in any of them until we got this one. The pictures are cute, and have enough little details to make it interesting to look at. The story is the basic "no more diapers" "let's sit and wait" "let's wash our hands" theme, but I agree with previous posters that something about the piratey language makes it more fun. I end up reading it at least twice, even after the deed is done, because he really likes to hear it, plus I have to sing the song parts at least 4 times. The closest I can come up with for a melody is the Pinocchio "An Actor's Life for Me" intro and the standard Pirates of the Caribbean song. Probably not many people who are as neurotic who feel like they need an actual tune, but in case you do, those seem to work. I have the same issue that the hat is adorable, and he loves to wear it, but it comes apart easily, so you'll probably have to tape it once it's fitted. The stickers are also very very fun and cute, but mine seem to have a problem staying stuck to the laminated hat. So far, he doesn't care, but it could probably be improved to be a little more sticky. Overall, I think it's a great addition to the potty-training library since I don't have to hunt down any printable charts and go buy stickers, it's all included.

I cannot recommend this book enough
As a mom of 2 and a pediatric OT, I cannot recommend this book enough! By far, this is the BEST potty training book I have seen. The potty used in the book is a real toilet. It comes with stickers and a pirate hat (tape helped this last longer). The pirate songs in the book about making pee pee and poo poo are catchy and fun to sing. My almost 2 year old loved sitting on the potty with his hat on and singing the songs. I will definitely be recommending this book to everyone I know.

Makes us laugh!
Love this book. I know it well. Two of my grandsons, 10 years apart, have each had their own. Success X 2, yay! We three have sang the pirate potty song many, many times. The boys enjoyed selecting just the right place for each "success" sticker throughout the book. It is quite entertaining with adorable pirate art and clever pirate ryhmes. Love the litte pirate mouse who runs around the ship wearing his little pirate vest and boots. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed in this book.

Good for 3+ year olds
It's a cute book but I bought it for my 20-month old and he wasn't interested at all. It's probably very good for 3 year olds (or children who are patient). It has 24 pages (i think only around 18-20 of them have words) but each page has a full sentence or two on it. The pages are made of thick paper (it'll fold/bend like a regular adult-book ... but thicker, obviously)The pirate hat was a nice addition but it didn't really stay together very well and my son ended up ripping part of it after a few minutes. He LOOOOOVED the stickers though so at least there's that.As for the story itself, it's cute but the first few pages of the book had nothing to do with potties (which is fine but since my son only sat through a few pages, it ended up being a completely pointless book)Bottom line - if your child can sit through long stories, go ahead and give this book a try. If your child is not patient enough for long stories, don't even bother.

Pirate Potty book
This is a fun story and the reward scheme is excellent motivation for my little boy to use his potty. The only thing I do not like is the American language used - had I realised this was not and English book I would have bought something else.

lovely story
I bought this for my little boy - as i had a similar book for my little girl and she potty trained great. Didn't work this way with him though. Great story - all cartoon drawing stickers etc. He loved it but didn't really help with potty training here.

Great
My daughter asked me to get this for my grandson - in great condition and he loved it. Really liked the stickers when he managed to use his potty correctly.
