With The All-Baroque Box we realize one of our fondest dreams: harnessing the deep catalogue of Archiv Produktion (supplemented on occasion by Decca L oiseau lyre recordings) to create a comprehensive collection of great music from Monteverdi to Bach. The music ranges from huge Baroque (Missa Salisburgensis, Venetian polychoral, Charpentier Te Deum) to intimate Baroque (the Goldberg Variations, Bach cello suites, solo cantatas) overwhelming in its impact and emotional content. Of course, Baroque music is also an ideal lifestyle choice nothing quite like it to get you going in the morning or to accompany your final thoughts at the end of the day . . . it s all here to sample and to revel in.OVERVIEWThe great names of Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Rameau, Handel and Bach are the main composers included, with vespers, concertos, operas, cantatas, oratorios and passions galore. There are classic recordings of Giovanni Gabrieli (Music for San Rocco), Schütz (Musikalische Exequien), Biber (Missa Salisburgensis), Lully (Le Roi danse), Charpentier, Purcell, Corelli, Couperins, Telemann, Heinichen, Domenico Scarlatti and Pergolesi. In all, the box contains four complete operas: Monteverdi s Orfeo, Purcell s Dido and Aeneas, Rameau s Dardanus and Handel s Giulio Cesare (with synopses in booklet). The perennial favourites are there too: the Allegri Miserere, the Pachelbel Canon and Gigue, Charpentier s Te Deum, Vivaldi withThe Four Seasons, Bach with the Brandenburg Concertos, St. Matthew Passion, Mass in B minor, and Handel with Messiah, Fireworks and Water Music and many more.PERFORMERS AND PERFORMANCESIf the repertoire is wide-ranging, the performances, almost all in the period-instrument tradition bring together the great artists of Archiv of the last 30 years: John Eliot Gardiner, Reinhard Goebel, Paul McCreesh, Marc Minkowski and Trevor Pinnock, each with their respective choirs and bands each of an outstanding quality. Soloists include Anne Sofie von Otter, Andreas Scholl, Emma Kirkby, Simon Preston, Christophe Rousset, Gustav Leonhardt, Simon Standage the heroes and heroines of the early music movement. To help out we have icons like Pierre Fournier and Nathan Milstein for the Bach solo works, like the Cello Suites and Sonatas and Partitas.BOOKLETThe box artwork captures a real Baroque look five different images of models floating in water, swathed in richly-coloured fabrics. They could be figures from a Roman baroque ceiling or altar. Running to 140 pages, the booklet includes, in addition to a full-scale tracklist, a Baroque timeline (in English) of political and cultural events, with many charming illustrations by Fred Münzmaier, DG s former creative director (selection included here).

Baroque At Its Best
This came in 2 days and I could not wait to begin listening. First of all, I liked the packaging: a handsome box, single CD sleeves, not too tight, a very well done 152 booklet not only listing the track information but also giving an informative timeline.Where to start? I felt like a kid in a candy store! Monteverdi, Gabrieli, Pachebel, Handel, Bach, or maybe Telemann? But wait, there's more!I began with Monteverdi's Vespers recorded in St. Marks Venice 1989 all digital. All the soloists are very good especially Nigel Robson and a young Bryn Terfel; the conductor is John Elliot Gardiner who leads a powerful performance. The Magnificat is presented in 2 versions, the first with 7 and then 6 soloists. Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed the performance.I followed up with Handel's Water Music and Royal Fireworks with Trevor Pinnock conducting from the harpsichord, all digital 1983 and 1985. I have heard many versions and this certainly ranks there with some of the best.It will take me some time to go through the balance of the set but from what I have already sampled, I will not be disappointed! This set is certainly worth having in your collection. Thanks to Vilhjálmur for listing all the tracks in the review section.

Clever, well priced HIP treasure of gold standard recordings
I have purchased this box set, and I do own just about 85% of the recordings that were previously issued separately over the years that are in this box set. It is the quality of the recordings, and the performances by the best of the digital era's Early Music Movement champions who are well regarded performers and conductors. The Amazon Editor's Review already listed those individuals, so I won't repeat here. These are Archiv recordings, after all, and the vast majority are ALL digital (DDD). The clarity of these recordings are unmatched. These are premium recordings of premium stars of the HIP universe. The value here is absolutely unbelievable. Far too often are such huge, comprehensive box sets filled with poor recordings and even more poor performances, and this is why those sets are so inexpensive. But wait! This set is the same LOW price for so many discs and recordings, but it is the QUALITY of the content that makes this box set the clear bargain of the era. If one is new to this sort of music, then PLEASE purchase this box set, as you will hear these pieces as good as it gets. Even today, 5 or 6 of these CD's could easily cost as much as this box set purchased separately the value of the content of these performances and recording quality are that good. I know because I acquired the vast majority of these recordings over time as they were released. The performers and musicians on this set command the top per CD retail price one sees as sticker shock when buying classical CD's. This is a welcome gift to those who have no alternative but the budget box set. This is the gift to young people exploring this era of music. If you have the slightest interest, buy this box set now. In addition, the low price of this box set makes it possible to acquire the few missing recordings on one's collection offered on this set at a huge discount from purchasing the CD's separately. I'm still in shock. Most of the works are choral, and what is considered among the very first Operas in Western Music, but recorded in the modern digital era. This box set is also a very good educational journey of early music with many fine well-known examples performed on period instruments. This is a very good buy.

So much Baroque, so little time.
This is an amazing deal: 50 CDs in the box. I have two old mini sound systems in my house. One can hold six CDs and the other two. I loaded them both up with CDs from this box. The systems are at opposite ends of the house. I could set them both off and then I would have Baroque throughout the house. At that rate it will still take me ages to get through this collection. The booklet that comes with the box set is a wonder in itself. Have a look at the site to see what I mean: [...]

Amazing - a lot of old favourites(Pinnock & English Concert - how brilliant these are!) and new discoveries (Minkowski). For someone who wants to properly explore this period of music I can think of no better place to start (or finish).

Superb recording of Baroque masterpieces
Archiv (an imprint of DG dedicated to earlier pieces) is one of the few labels I just automatically know will combine great engineering with interesting baroque and era repertoire and great artists. To have 50 of their best CDs in one location is a windfall for collectors and those looking to build a collection. There's all the baroque masterpieces in this box, along with a decent booklet that covers the contents. The set has all the traditional pieces from Monteverdi, Bach, Teleman, Purcell, Handel and more well-known composers, as well as those that only baroque and choral fans will know, such as Lully, Arcadia, Charpentier, Schutz, Rameau and a lot more. For those who are not well-versed in baroque music, there's a plethora of new-to-you composers to revel in. Even for those of us who've been collecting for decades, there's music here I didn't have in my collection, or some for which I welcome a different interpretation.Every disk in the set is superbaly engineered and recorded, and remastered as rquired from the analog domain. Archiv always had excellent sound, and these discs continue that tradition. Further, the artists are all established and known, doing what they do best. For the folks who put together this box, wading through the Archiv catalog must have been both fun and difficult; fun because there's so much to choose from, and difficult because there's inevitably some music you want to include but can't. There's little repetition in this box with others from the same publishing house, and considering the esoteric nature of some of these discs, it's likely that this will be your only source of these discs for many years.Whether you love the baroque or just learning about it, this box has everything you need at a wonderful price. I very eagerly went through the discs, in some cases sparking memories of listening to the LP, and in others comparing to other interpretations. This is a great box set of wonderful music, and it needs to be in your collection. Congratulations to Archiv on a lovely box product, as well as a showcase for their superb history of producing outstanding music recordings.

Comunque consigliato vivamente
