Give Your Dog a Bone: The Practical Commonsense Way to Feed Dogs for a Long Healthy Life
P**E
Raw food is a healthy way to feed your dog. Learn more about it.
This book has been very helpful to me as our new puppy came to us eating raw food. I wanted to try raw food with him for a couple of reasons. The first one is that we have had two of our standard poodles bloat and it is possible that raw food can prevent this horrible health issue which effects a dog for the rest of his/her life. Raw food doesn’t swell like a grain-based kibble. Raw food is also more completely digested and doesn’t hang around in the stomach potentially allowing bloat. This has not been clinically proven, but the rationale makes sense to me.Secondly, he is so healthy and growing well. He has had no stomach problems of any kind and he is 4 1/2 months old. Our poodles had stomach issues from the beginning. He sleeps well, eats well, and enjoys life. Also chewing bones regularly helps dental health. Finally, Give Your Dog a Bone seems to just make sense to me. This is how wild dogs eat.In closing, it is very important to educate yourself in feeding your dog raw food. Seek vets who support this way of feeding and find others who have chosen this path. The more you learn the better your dogs health will be.

Good starting point for information
When starting a raw diet with your dog I think its important to read ALL the info out there. This is one of the books out there that is most popular. I read it, and took a few things from it, but ultimately feed how I feel is best (I dont do veggies). This book and quite a few others helped me gain the confidence to finally switch from kibble to raw, and its was the best thing I ever did for my dogs. Dogaware.com is a great site for reliable info as well.

Do not waste your money
Simply the worst book I ever bought. I only bought it because the breeder recommended. Any chapter you read there is absolutely no answers, like you decide or everything ok. First grains are bad, then grains are ok. No useful information at all, zero, I telling you , your brain will heat up just trying to explain what you just read. Waste of money, you would get 100 times more info simply by Google

DON'T AGREE WITH ALL
HIS IS ONE OF THREE BOOKS THAT I HAVE READ, MOST OF WHAT HE WROTE I AGREE WITH. I DID SEE ONE SHOCKING STATEMENT IN HIS BOOK THAT I AM STILL WONDERING ABOUT. HE SAYS HE FEEDS HIS DOGS RAISINS, WHICH COME FROM GRAPES, BOTH ARE TOXIC TO DOGS....SO TOTALLY A BAD CHOICE. HE MUST NOT BE FEEDING THEM MUCH OF THE POISON SINCE THEY ARE STILL ALIVE.

Good information for dog owners if a little dated
This book was written in 1993 so it does not have the most current information about a couple of issues like feeding certain legumes lkek peanuts and soy to dogs (which can interfere with hormones), certain types of oils--Nourishing Fats is the best book to learn the most about fats and oils, and it states that it is ok or even preferable to feed dogs garlic, which is now considered a poison for dogs. Beyond those few items, the basic message that dogs should live on raw meaty bones is excellent and I agree that it makes for very healthy dogs. It also does an excellent job of explaining why kibble dog food and cooked food generally makes for unhealthy dogs.

Wow what a great source of information for raw and barf diets . I feed all my puppies this way now and have seen a great amount of good . I feed them at first with dog foods like blue etc I think I went through about 6 different brand and still my puppies had Diarrhea and vomiting allergies and vet visits . I now have solid poops 2 times a day ,no vomiting an.d haven't seen a vet in a month. so if looking for a better option in feeding this is a great start also look into forms and groups. I hope this helps you too. 10 stars

A decent book, but judge or research info
A bit repetitive, and some parts are confusing and contradictory. But the overall information seems good if you're interested in raw feeding and understanding the "whys"

Great, factual information
This book is worth every dollar, has a ton of very useful information that is more than worth the read if you have a doggy of your own that you want sticking around for a while. It's a bit biased, but I've transitioned my dog over to his new diet and he is healthier than ever!

More of a basic beginner’s guide.
This book is very basic if you want to start raw feeding your dogs. I personally found the contents outdated and not up to speed with recent studies and findings on dog nutrition. It’s so important that dogs get a complete, balanced meal and I feel this book fails to emphasise this. I found YouTube videos on this subject more educational, especially by Dr Karen Becker and Rodney Habib.

Buy this book and improve your dogs health.
When my dog was diagnosed with allergies to just about every filler used in commercial dog food together with numerous pollens and plants, my vet suggested raw feeding. A friend who raw feeds recommended this book to me and it seemed to me that the author was talking a lot of sense. After having read this book and seeing what raw feeding has done for my dog, I would never go back to commercial dog food. One year on my dogs allergies are under control and for the first time in his life he likes his food, (and he's five years old). His teeth are clean, his coat is shiny and I feel much better knowing that I am giving him a diet more suited to him.Although the author has been criticised for repeating himself throughout the book, I find that useful because there is a lot to take in and it would be easy to forget something important that had been said earlier in the book. Also, it is laid out so that it is easy to find things quickly for reference without rereading the whole book and therefore some things need to be repeated as they are relevant to numerous sections. The book is very comprehensive and covers the principals behind raw feeding, feeding dogs at various stages of their lives, puppies, adults, senior dogs and gives examples of daily feeding menus amongst other topics.Sourcing raw meat for dogs is becoming easier all the time as numerous companies are springing up supplying reasonably priced frozen raw meat ready mixed but you do need a good book, such as this, to make sure you are giving your dog a balanced diet.Don't let the price of the book put you off, you'll save far more than that in the future on both food and vets bills, as raw fed dogs are generally healthier than their commercial fed friends. Although my dog was diagnosed with some pretty serious allergies early last year, which normally would have had me back and forth to the vets for treatments over the last year, it's not been necessary to go to the vets since shortly after starting raw feeding.I would thoroughly recommend this book.

The use of Desiccated Liver with Brewers Yeast
For an almost perfect Vitamin B Complex combine the Desiccated Liver with the Brewers Yeast on a 2:1 ratio. My husband, Arthur Fairhurst, like yourself, has made a life-long study of supplementing the body with additional nutrients for Bodybuilders and Spots People. With his expert knowledge he put together a dietary plan for Ben. Ben was my Uncle"s Golden Retriever. My uncle passed away and we took Ben on, aged 9. His coat had lost its colour, he was lethargic and sad. After a number of months on his new regime the colour came back to his coat, he became full of life again and lived until he was over 15 years of age.Good nutrition does work! Whether it be for animals or humans. Do feed yourself and your pet correctly

don't listen to the vet. give it a go.
I have read a few books now on the BARF diet before starting my GSD on raw. This is an excellent read. If you're in any doubt about the raw food diet, read the book and try it out. It works for my lad who was scratching and chewing non stop. His skin has settled and he is calmer. Vets may not like the diet because it loses them work. My vet was more than happy for my boy to eat kibble and take steroids at £70 a visit. He hasn't needed a vet for months since starting the BARF diet.
