HB is the same as #2. 2B is softer and writes darker. Both are graphite. The black colored lead is not graphite and cannot be erased. It's more like a color pencil.

How many boxes are there

As it states in the ad, there are three boxes. They seem to work fine for my daughters who are picky about their pencil lead.
