Mesa Tactical 12G SureShell Ply Carrier Fits Mossberg 500

A less expensive alternative to Mesa Tactical's aluminum side saddle.
First things first, you need to check to see if your shotgun's forearm is going to interfere with the side saddle. Remington 870s tend to have a forearm that extends back far enough to cover up the receiver, which isn't as common with Mossberg shotguns, which this model is made for, though you might have aftermarket stuff that might mess with the side saddle. Now, on to the meat and potatoes. I have the aluminum version installed on an 870 and on a Mossberg 500 and I honestly can't tell the difference between the two other than maybe the aluminum model could probably better withstand a beating if you like to throw your gun around. For the home defense gun that you just wanna keep loaded up and ready to rock and roll, heck, even a TacStar would probably serve you just fine, although if you're buying this model, you probably want the peace of mind of knowing your equipment is gonna work when life is on the line, and if that is the case, you've come to the right product in my honest opinion. This thing isn't liable to snap off if you get it caught on something, which I've done with the TacStar type installed on my other Maverick 88, rendering it effectively a 5-shell side saddle instead.Side saddles are a must-have for your defensive shotgun loadout. It's one of those things that could keep your bad day from getting even worse. Yeah, the saying is true that if you have to fire more than a few rounds out of your home defense gun, you're probably already eff'd, but at least your gun won't run dry when you really need it most. Install one of these, take a class, and train, train, train. You never know when your family might depend on you to protect them from the predators of our world.

Quality, Easy Install, Minimalist side saddle
I got the Mesa Tactical 12G SureShell Ply Carrier Fits Mossberg 500, pleasantly surprised to see it has a aluminum back plate and not plastic. It comes with great instructions and everything you need to install save for blue loctite and a medium sized screwdriver. Even came with two hex wrenches and an extra chicago screw, and a cool sticker. USA made! Installation was easy enough, replaces the ejector screw and trigger group pin, with a rubber gasket that goes between the saddle and the receiver. Took maybe 10 min. to install and I was going slowly and carefully. Haven't shot with it yet but I don't foresee any issues. Oh, also comes with two additional pieces that replace the stock one, that tightens or loosens the shell holder's grip on the shells. I like the amount of tension that the one that it came installed with offers.

Impossible to install on Left-handed action
I didn't quite think about the mounting process being flipped for my left handed 590 until it arrived, but then again nothing in the description or the installation book warned anything against it anyway, and I figured it would just have been addressed by the company. Mesa apparently has done nothing for it. All the holes in the bracket are piloted on one side, so it can't be flipped for the other side of my 590. So weird; as a firearm accessory manufacturer, you should understand there are left handed models, right? You clearly have the ability to either make a left-handed bracket or add the capabilities to the current bracket (it has extra holes for other models, why not for left handed applications?) Why is this such an oversight? Sucks that I'm left-handed, I guess. Returning.

You can't keep the shells in it for more than a couple of days or the rubber that holds them in would deform. Normally I wouldn't have that much of a problem with that, but this was mentioned nowhere in the description, which it should be.The makers also should have pre cut the rubber backing or made one just for each model instead of making you cut it.

Quality Product
Great product for the price. Easy to install. Took about 15 mins to install on my Mav 88. Shot shells held in place during range time. Not sure if its made for long term shot shell storing.

more ammo is always a good thing.
Mesa makes some good stuff and this is some of it. I have these shell holders on both my home defense Mossbergs and am quite satisfied with them. nobody every bitched about having too much ammo during a crisis.
