This book presents the fundamental science of learning in such a clear and simple sounding way that you wonder why it isn't being taught at every local class.I found this so very helpful because the concepts are described in such an easily understood manner that after my first read I thought "of course, piece of cake!".But I love that it isn't simplistic, it is actually placing clarity on a subject that is hard to fully grasp so I can now more easily tackle dog training in short, fun sessions that will help deepen my relationship with my dog, and get my dog to want to work with me.The unique thing I took from this book was the great advice on how to handle situations where what the dog wants and what I want don't align. Positive, force-free training doesn't mean permissive, but it does mean you can have a fun-loving dog who chooses to behave, if you consistently build the behaviours over time. Patience grasshopper!

In this book, Ms. Fenzi goes beyond, "hold a treat over the dog's head and give it to him when he sits" to discuss how to make trained behaviors happen in everyday life situations. This is the "missing link" for so many who attend introductory dog training classes, especially when they don't go on to sports and other activities.The book is well written, accessible to the average person, yet full of gems for the more experienced trainer. And it is all from a highly effective positive reinforcement based approach.This one is worth a read, no matter what your training experience level may be!!!And, if you are a dog owner and you say, "my only does (insert behavior) when I have a treat/ball/etc.", then this book is perfect for you!!! Follow the advice of the author in this book and you will take your dog's training to a whole new level!

Denise Fenzi is absolutely the BEST at training dogs and writing the scripts for dog training I have ever found! Denise's knowledge and understanding of dogs, kids, psychology, and WHY your dog thinks and behaves as he does, is over the top of any seminars, schooling, books, or materials I have ever invested in. She understands how a dog learns, thinks, and how to build a chain with each and every link connected together to make the whole chain strong and invincible. I congratulate Denise on her profound insight into training and how to teach your dog in a happy and humane and fun way!I guarantee you will be extremely rewarded as I am, in investing in Denise's books and training methods. It is an eye opener event and so much easy to understand and put into use information. Easy for pet owners to follow and easy for those wising to train beyond pet ownership.

I was a little disappointed in this book since it's the same material that I taught in my classes 20 years ago - with the 3 Ds - distance, duration and distraction. That said, it's very well laid-out and systematic. I would recommend it highly for beginner trainers.

I have been training dogs in obedience for over 20 years, never has there been a book that addresses the subject of why.... Why does my dog sit perfect at home, but suddenly 'won't' do it when we go to the park?This book explains exactly why your dog is doing that, and more!The explanations and concepts are easy to understand, written well, using words anyone can understand. The lesson plans are easy for even a beginner to be grasp and follow.I have found it invaluable for myself, and have highly recommended it to others!A super addition to any obedience book collection, in fact, I would say it's a must have!!

Going in, this book assumes that the reader has a basic understanding of rewards-based training. This book is for the intermediate dog owner who is looking to improve their training.This book helps you set up a training plan to increase distance, duration, and distraction to any and all of your dog's behaviors. It sets up clear and simple steps, and explains each of them in detail. If you follow the steps outlined in this book, you absolutely will have success in your training.I would *highly* recommend this book. It is an excellent addition to anyone's dog training library.

Well, it didn't really reveal anything I hadn't discerned from other sources, but it was clear and easy to read.

I train dogs for competition purposes. I also train other people's pet dogs. This book has given me insights in both areas. While reading this book today, I found myself highlighting parts for both types of training- often the same portion of the book for each type of training. I find that all of Ms Fenzi's books cover things I need in everyday life with my dogs. She has a way of making her information easy to understand and apply to most any situation. The added bonus: Her books are very positive and fun to read. I can learn and smile while doing so.

This book is an easy to read common sense approach if you are self training your own dog(s). Well worth the money!

Spoiler : don't read this book before your dog obeys to simple orders in easy situations.There are a lot of ressources (books and youtube videos) to learn the basics.This is the best book that will make your dog trust you, and make you trust your dog.Even in the most distracting situations.No filler like in the other books, every line is important.This will be my Bible.But it's also the worse book in my Kindle collection, because the format is like a simple PDF, it's not customizable like more recent MOBI files.I strongly recommend this book over all the others.Thanks to the author for sharing this invaluable knowledge.
