Excellent book - Easy to understand, super practical and provides results
I Love this book. It is an easy read and really helps you get a strategy to help with building your focus, attention and resilience to stress.Lack of focus, anxiety and stress are very prevalent today and whilst there are some great books on strategies to learn and focus they don't necessarily cover the breath aspect of it. I have found that I struggle many times with Automatic Negative Thoughts, Rumination and just wanting to clear the mind to get some focus. I have found the exercises in this book really useful in helping with this.We have the ability to use our breath to change our emotional state which can have a massive impact on our ability to focus, hold attention span, concentrate and build a mental state that can keep us in flow even during very stressful times.Patrick already has other books he has written on breathing like The Oxygen Advantage and The Breathing Cure, I highly recommend those as well. You don't have to read those books to use this book. It has complete information in itself. This book does have some of the breathing exercises from those two and concepts such as BOLT and the case against Mouth Breathing but it also shares specific exercises that help in building focus so even if you have read those two, there will be new information to get from this book.It is very easy to read, it has good illustrations which show up very well on the Kindle format and it makes it super practical to just do the exercises and get the results. For example there is an exercise called Get in the Zone which Patrick uses with athletes to get them centered just before a competition. I found it really useful to start my work day with absolute focus and calm. Then there are other exercises to clear your head, reduce anxiety when you are getting stressed, breathing for negative thinking, for public speaking, getting deep sleep and so on.There are some exercises which they specify as only suitable for those who are relatively young, fit and in good health but there are others which would be suitable for all. The book ensures it signposts this appropriately.I highly recommend everyone read this book, it can support you in building your focus muscle, hold better attention and develop resilience just through simple breathing exercises that you can incorporate in your daily life.
