John Frederick Lewis ( 1805 - 1876 ) was the most important Orientalist working in England. After travelling in Europe during 4 years, ending in Constantinople, he moved to Cairo where he settled for a decade. He returned to England with a series of watercolour pictures showing Eastern life that proved very popular, with the British public. His technique was very precise, with a realistic depiction of flowers. This large painting is one of the few oil painting that he made during his stay in Cairo. He chose to paint his wife, dressed in oriental clothes, in the Bey's garden.
