Jeet Kune Do: The Arsenal of Self-Expression (Tuttle Specials)

One of my favorite authors.
I loved her book on the 'Straight lead!" That was one of the best martial arts books I've ever read! This is a lot like that one. One of the reasons I liked it so much is how detailed she was. She traced everything she said back to Bruce Lee himself. She never met him. Her teacher is one of the two in all the other books that were written after his death. He was with Bruce at the beginning. She actually had access to Bruce's library of books. She went to the sources he quoted in using. She also wrote it like a scientific paper, footnoting and providing the sources for each and everything that was in Bruce's written notes and so forth. She really goes out of her way to not only go back to Bruce Lee, through her teacher, but to where Bruce got his ideas from, his research. i say all of this because she does a good job doing the same in this one. This book is a lot broader in scope. The other one was about 1 technique, the lead. This one is about the overall all art. She's not as detailed as that book. She's covering a lot more than 1 technique in this book. But she does build on the other books detailed orientation. I learned a lot from it. A lot I carried over from the 1st one. Some i didn't. I appreciate all of it. She is very detailed in every explanation, of every technique. Not just in how to do it, but why it's done this specific way. Yes, others may do it differently. But she gives a detailed explanation, and cites her reasons for each and every thing! It's not just someone saying do it this way, because I say so, or because Bruce did it this way. She explains why Bruce did it this way! He did it because he studied things in extreme detail to find the absolute best way to do a technique!. I am trying to train my child. I love that I can explain why it should be done this way and not that way. I can trace it back to a scientific reason. Not ego! It makes one a more educated fighter.I love this book! I love the way she put it together!

Fantastic JKD Book
Immediately you can tell that this book is written by someone who is very smart. It is evident that Tom is an experience practitioner and teacher of JFJKD, and the content and detail of this book could only come from such a person. Sources and reference are provided lending this book a credibility I have not seen in any other martial art book. It is great to see the roots of JKD.'The Arsenal of Self-Expression' is the perfect title. The pictures are great. There is nice balance between techniques and explanation. The book is well structured and easy to read.Tom's book is the 'missing pieces' that no-one seems to be able to satisfactorily provide you in your martial arts.I look forward to seeing Tom's hook kicks and straight leads. There are minor typos and I would have described the 'physic 101' a little differently. However, no content is lost and book is deserving of 5 stars.

The best book on JKD out there
This is by far the best book on JKD ever written (outside of Bruce Lee of course).Terri Tom is extremely knowledgable on body mechanics and the art of JKD as taught to her by Ted Wong.Other than the books written by Bruce Lee himself, this is the only book that teaches the true art of JKD.

Probably the most in depth book on bio mechanics in martial arts. Great addition to any martial artist. Highly recommended.

An Honest Guiding Manual on Jeet Kune Do
This is a great book on Jeet Kune Do techniques. Other than some typos, this is a slimmed-down manual with lots of to-the-point explanations and clear pictures. Reading through Bruce Lee's Fighting Method and the Tao, I couldn't help but feel somewhat lost. After all these books are almost 40 years old. What is not found in this book is "borrowed concepts" that duly or not, frequently surface in many JKD books (for example, trapping). Specifically, this book is based on different JKD basic footwork and strikes, especially the utilization of the famous straight power lead (to which Tom dedicated a complete book). As Tom points out, Bruce Lee was on his way to create a martial art that was based on simplicity and science. This book is an honest study of what Bruce Lee was working on before his untimely death. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in JKD and martial arts.

THE LAW AND THE PRINCIPLE OF JKD
5 STARS AND 2 THUMBS UP FOR THE"ARSENAL" TERI TOM HAS DONE AN EXCLENT JOB OF EXPLAINING THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF JKD, IT IS THE LAW AND THE PRINCIPLE OF JEET KUNE DO. I HAVE READ THE OTHER REVIEWS AND MUST DISAGREE WITH THOSE WHO DIS-AGREE! JKD HAS ONLY 5 PUNCHES AND 3 KICKS, ALL EXPLAINED TO PERFECTION BY TERI TOM. I HAVE SEEN MANY JKD INSTRUCTORS OVER THE YEARS AND ONLY A HANDFULL CAN PERFORM THE STRIGHT LEAD. WHY? BECAUSE THE MECHANICS OF THIS PUNCH TAKES A LONG TIME TO LEARN. ALL OTHER PUNCHES EVELVE FROM THE STRIGHT LEAD. YOU CAN LEARN THE 4 BASIC PUNCHES OF WESTERN BOXING IN A FEW DAYS, MASTERY TAKES YEARS. SO IT IS WITH THE STRIGHT LEAD....ONLY 1 IN 10,000 CAN HANDLE IT! HAVING KNOWN TED WONG SINCE 1994 I CAN SAY THAT WHAT IS IN TOMS' BOOK IS WHAT SIFU TED WONG HAS TAUGHT ME. THE LAW AND THE PRINCIPLE OF JUN FAN JEET KUNE DO. YES, THIS BOOK IS HELPFULL BUT YOU CAN NOT LEARN JKD FROM A BOOK, ONLY BY ONE TO ONE INSTRUCTION FROM ONE WHO CAN REALLY DO IT. THIS BOOK EXPLAINS JKD FROM A HISTORICAL AND SCIENTIFIC POINT OF VIEW.....IF YOU DOUBT IT, GO THE THE SOURCE HIMSELF, BRUCE LEE AND REDISCOVER WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN MISSING, THE TRUTH OF THE LAW AND THE PRINCIPLE OF JEET KUNE DO. DR. RICK LENGYEL, JKD INSTRUCTOR UNDER BILL MATTUCCI, LICENSED ACUPUNCTURIST/HERBALIST, STUDENT OF TED WONG.
