The Pea That Was Me (Volume 4): A Single Mom’s/Sperm Donation Children’s Story

This book really does a pretty good job of explaining a single mom using donor sperm! There are a few silly things in there that take away from the story a bit, which is why it lost a star. I wanted to write a review to address all the concerns of the people who gave it a low rating. First, by the time I got the book the error where it listed the dad at the back was fixed. The sad faced mom is still in there though, as is the fact that the main character Pea is a boy and I have a girl. Luckily, the pages are not very shiny and I was able to very easily make some minor modifications with just a marker and a crayon. I very easily made the frown of the sad mom- talking about how she didn’t have a man in her life - into a smiling mom. I also turned the mother into a brunette, and gave the little P a curlyhaired blonde ponytail, making the family look more like mine. It was pretty easy to do! Right now, this is one of the best books for explaining the process in toddler friendly language

I really wanted to like this book, but i had a really huge issue with the page that says "mommy doesn't have a man," and she the picture looks sad. I am a HAPPY SMBC, and never wanted or needed a man in my life. I am NOT sad about my decision to go it alone. there are plenty of better books than this. Try For mommy so loved me, it is so much better, and the author truly understands what being a single mother by choice is.

I don't know why the baby pea at the end couldn't be androgynous. The book explains a "girl pea" and "boy pea" and then at the end the "pea that was me" is illustrated as a boy pea. Which is great if you have a son but I have a daughter and I wanted a character that she could relate to.

Part of the book describes that mommy "didn't have a man in her life." The associated illustration shows an unhappy woman. Did not like the implication.

This is a cute and simple way to explain to your child how they came into this world.

these books are great for alternative families...really appreciate that they exist

I liked the book and the information is good for my child but I dropped it by a star b/c on the last page titled "My Story" where you put the information about the child there is a line for Dad's name after the Mom's name line. This book is about a SINGLE mom's journey and most kids who will be reading this book don't have a dad and are sensitive to that fact and don't need a blank line as a reminder. I'm still deciding whether I will let my child read it b/c of that.

This is the perfect book to share my journey to motherhood with my two year old son!

Really disappointed that the cost of returning the item is so high as I would definitely have done so otherwiseThe book is a nice idea but I find it bizarre that it sets out with a bunch of animated peas, then suddenly goes straight into explaining a sperm and an egg and on the next page says they make a pea. The story would - in my opinion - be more confusing for a young child, than anything elseIt also seems a bit bland in its illustrations which is a shame.I personally wouldn't recommend it

A lovely story. Obviously well thought out. We enjoyed this book. Although a lot of emphasis was put on the great doctor when all parties are equally as great as the other, including mum

Brilliant book. Great for children. Used it to explain to my now 6 year old and he’s loved it and taken it all in and asked questions.

Great story that I read (and will continue to) with my donor concieved son. Written in American English (mommy) which doesn't matter too much to us.

This is such a sweet book and my daughter totally loves it. It’s been her pick almost every night since it arrived a few weeks ago!
