The principle is a chemical reaction between the powder inside and the oxygen in the air, it's actually burning but very very slow so it heats up to about 40-50C and stays warm for hours. It works exactly as a hot-water bottle but it's small so you can have it sealed in your purse at all times just in case or wear it all day long without anyone noticing. After 6-8 hours the reaction is finished and it cools down but you may remove it earlier and throw it away still warm, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't start a fire.
