Very Well Written
I bought this book to help me with learning more about addiction, as my sister is in the deepest depths of it and has been for a long time. It helped me break through the numbness I had felt, but more so helped me re-evaluate my own numbing behaviors in the world. It was beautifully written and very engaging, and I walked away feeling like I could take the lessons learned and model a better life even for myself.

Must Read for Parents/Educators/Humans
The author weaves together recent research about how modern life is designed to max-out the pleasure-side of our brains. Fantastic read for anyone feeling 'empty' in modern life - includes practical solutions to reset your pleasure/pain balance.

Game changer
Very informative. I bet a lot of people on antidepressants and anti- anxiety meds just need to boost their neurotransmitters. Safer.

Structured and easy to apply book
As a counselor working with Substance abuse disorder, I found this book valuable. It has plenty examples of addictive behaviors, explaining how author’s approach effective with that.

Refreshing Read
Great balance of physiology and it's application to real word behavior. Provides the epigenetic highlights in the translation of behavior! Loved the science of it all.

Taking your choices for pleasure seriously!
This is a wake up call for us to stop making automatic choices about what we want to do for pleasure. The most thoughtless choices are those that harm us in the long run!

Excellent Primer on the Dopamine Effect, Pain-Pleasure Balance
This is a nicely condensed, well-writtten book that explains some of the reasons behind and the power of addiction, viewed through the lens of our brain's' dopamine regulation system. A fast reader will probably get through it in a weekend. Took me a few extra days but definitely worth it.There are many compelling real-world examples of how people get hooked into destructive behaviors, as well as the highlights of the author's therapeutic interactions with a few of them, in each case showing a path (potentially one the reader could take if applicable) of how the person was able to free themselves from the problem. Quite a few insights into how AA and other legitimate 12 step programs can help people / why it works as well.Definitely more aimed at helping the reader understand what is happening (with typical addiction scenarios) at a physiological and practical level, than a "in the weeds" neuroscience book, or typical inch deep "self-help" book. Helps that the author is a medical doctor / psychiatrist, so you know she has a pretty good idea what she's talking about, and is even honest with some of her own shortcomings and mistakes she had to deal with as a child, parent, therapist. If all this sounds like something that might help you start to get out of a bad situation, buy the book. You won't regret it.

Fantastic read
I highly recommend this book! It provides so much clarity and insight into addiction, as well as human behaviour as a whole. I have an entirely new perspective on addiction, as well as some of my own behaviours which I wasn’t aware of previously. The language in this book was very easy to follow, and Anna Lembke does a fantastic job of explaining more complex theory when it does come up. Also, I loved the use of the illustrations!

Very interesting and useful
In a society where we can be addicted to almost anything (Tv series, drugs, video games, food, etc) we can defeat our addiction to dopamine. Learning how our brain works is the beginning of our recovery.
