Where is this router made?

Says made in Japan on the box. I was blown away considering there are crappy routers from triton for similar money.

Can I use a 2 1/2 inch diameter bit with this router?

Yes, but just barely. This is a wonderful router with an extremely powerful motor and very precise plunge mechanisms and other adjustments, much better than the router that it replaced, but the opening in the bottom skirt is smaller than that previous tool at just over 2.5 inches.

Is the variable speed worrh the extra money over Makitas other model without vs?

Yes. Spend the money. If you want to use large bits or large diameter bits, you can slow the router down, which makes the tool much safer and the machining much more relaxed.
