This filter works...quit thinking about it and click purchase now.
Got this yesterday...walked down to the creek and filtered water. I personally didn't feel like it was too hard to get water to filter through. Maybe I was expecting it to be harder from all the other reviews.. Happy to say it seems to have worked. The whistle is loud and the light is working fine. In the dark, you will be able to find stuff in a back pack easily with it if that is all you have. The knife wasn't very sharp but a few runs with a standard sharpener and it is good to go. The compass is...well...It seems to point north...kinda. It's liquid filled but mine seems to be only half way filled so the needle is not free flowing to get to true north. The ferrous rod shoots sparks like it should. I'm happy with it at $39.95. I should have jumped on this when I saw it for $29. If I see it go that cheap again I'll buy more for my kids who backpack a lot.Update 7/3/2017: I continue to like this filter. I still think it would be a steal at $29, at $39 it's about the top of the price mark I would spend. One thing I would like to see different and I did was I bought extra hose for the output side of the filter so I could put the bottle I'm filtering into and place it on the ground rather than in my lap.

It works
Worked as expected on the first 5-day trip. Very light and compact and the bag is nice. The only minor complaint is that the tubes come off too easily.

Nice!
Flint works well. Filter works well. Pulled water from a river that you can see had specs of "stuff" and the water came out clean on the other end.

Sturdy water filter
Very quick shipping. Water filter feels sturdy. I have only used it to make sure it works, also instructions said run some water through it and do not drink the first few cups. I have not used the filter in dirty water yet, but I like the washable ceramic filter.

Lighter and smaller than expected!
I am very impressed with this filter, it is very light weight and has allowed me to not have to carry a huge quart Nalgene everywhere I go while I'm camping. I can also actually rely on consistent clean water, so carrying freeze-dried and dehydrated foods is actually viable. I would say my last camping trip I saved about 4lbs of weight thanks to this filter, very happy with its performance and simple design

Great filter for backpacking or kayaking trips
This kit is very functional and easy to use. I recently used it for a three day kayak trip and we had good drinkable water in minutes. I did not attempt to use the knife, compass, flint. Those are extras that didn't factor into my decision for this filter. It is small enough to use for backpacking or kayaking.

Multifunction Water Filer
it works fine. It was hard to pump, but it could get easier as I use it more. It is easier than using a Lifestraw.
