Addicted to Nigel's books
J'adore. Completely. Totally. I am just plain in love. Start with book design - beautiful - lovely paper, beautiful photos, fabulous font. Maybe it's a little unwieldy in the kitchen but I'm forgiving of that. The writing is amazing - heart-achingly nostalgic, mouthwateringly descriptive, and personal. A cookbook you actually want to READ. The recipes - perfection. Although some ingredients might be a challenge to find there is a US edition note to help make subs. A great gift book but please, buy a copy for yourself too (get a copy of Tender while you're at it). One complaint (just to try and temper my gushing) - no melon recipes but to be fair it is subtitled "A Cook in the Orchard". Lots of funky berry recipes plus plums, peaches, apricots, pears, quince, apricots, rhubarb, many many more - just good stuff. Best recipe so far - Goat Cheese Scone to go with Pears. In fact, I think I'll go make one now.

This is Nigel Slater’s best cookbook.
Nigel Slater, prolific UK food columnist and cookbook author, has hit it out of the park with Ripe. This book is centrally about the fruit he has grown and harvested from his small back garden and made into an array of delectable offerings both sweet and savory. You will want to cook many of the dishes he has included, especially after studying the beautiful photographs.

Better in Book than ebook
I was very disappointed with this ebook. This book has many photos. Some of the photos are not very attractive. This book was clearly written for an English or European reader. The author must have decided to feather her nest by jumping the pond like so many other European authors. I am lead to believe this because, after a wordy introduction explaining why the reader should buy fruit trees and shrubs, there are 2 pages on "a note on the US edition" in which the author states."In editing this book for an American audience,....the recipes, cooking instructions have been Americanized so that the ingredients, terminology, and measurements are familiar to US reader".On that page the difference in food terms for different types of sugar used in England and the United States of America is explained. Other than that one ingredient there is no other attempt to make sure that the "US reader" understands a term. The publisher, when editing for an American book release, could have easily put the American term in parentheses following the British word to help the reader. The writing style of the author seems to ramble. Most of the recipes in this collection were not appealing or something that I will ever prepare. Save money and check this out at a library.

amazing book
i have at least a hundred cookbooks but none as beautiful as this book. the pictures are amazing, the ingredients are available. and I am starting with apples and moving forward. The baked apples seems like an easy one, but this book throws in something you might not expect.. It really is hard to explain. I purchased Tender as well and I would say to anyone who loves cookbooks the way I do... grab yourself a cup of tea and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. it was like taking a mini vacation.the apricot and raspberry tort was out of this world. amazing.. its the only word i can think of.

Devoured it
A passionate ballad for fruit - from seed to table. Each 'chapter' is focused on a different fruit - first with a bit of autobiographical exposition about the author's history with the fruit, then how to grow it, what it pairs well with, how to prepare it in a variety of ways. You'll plan a garden in your head by the time you've only read partway through. Beautiful photography and inspired recipes.
