Paul for Everyone: The Prison Letters (The New Testament for Everyone)

Clear, practical, compelling.
NT Wright's commentaries are some of my favorites - if he has one on a book I'm reading, teaching or preaching, I'll read it. They're short, illustrated well, and loaded with subtle hints at much deeper principles under the surface.I've suggested this book for normal people (I'm a pastor, so I read commentaries weekly for my work) and those that have purchased NT Wright's "Everyone" series, have commented how helpful and encouraging it was in their personal devotional reading.

Highly Recommended
This commentary is written in a style that is much more like a devotional with depth. Wright uses a brief illustration before getting into the meaning of the passage. He has translated the scriptures himself and uses that version to introduce each section. The translation brings his perspective into play, of course, but that helps to make the points he is emphasizing about each portion of the scripture. Reading it with another translation by the side is helpful. There isn't the deep Greek word exposition and other overwhelming-to-the-layperson that is in other commentaries that I also appreciate, like the New International Commentary on the New Testament by Simpson and Bruce for two of the same epistles. However, Wright's friendly and approachable style is wonderful to read and very uplifting while also holding Christians to the expectations in the Word of God.

Excellent
Over the last 2 years I have read N.T. Wright everyday in my devotionals. He has interpreted the scripture that brings integrity of the text and honors God’s holiness and the centrality of the Kingdom and Jesus as King. The “for everyone” series is truly a gift. Take this gift and be blessed!

For Scholars
How does one man (with an excellent team) produce such great commentary? I am precise Wright’s original translation. He makes the point this is ‘for everyone.’

Just got done preaching through Philippians and this commentary was one of my "go-to" resources. Thankful for it!

Wright is the layman's yeoman
Bishop Wright's commentaries, which is really what this series is (i.e., Paul for Everyone, John for Everyone, Luke fr Everyone, etc.) are a superb gift to the Church. Though one of the finest academic New Testament scholars alive, his commentaries are extremely readable and accessible for the layman.Even though his audience is the layman or woman, his work is rooted in serious thought, scholarship and reflection. He doesn't always try to solve or answer every textual or theological problem but he will always give the basic tools or parameters allowing the reader to make one's own decision. He is quite reliable in his underlying exegesis of the text. His tone is pastoral, hortatory and narrative. I use these commentaries for devotional reading.Highly recommend Dr. Wright and this "Everyone" series.

Fine go to guide
As a priest, I have these books a substitute for the Barclay's Commentaries that were popular in the 1970's and 1980's. In an active parish it is sometimes hard to do the kind of exegesis that I would like. This is my go to quick guide to get a frame of reference and some research to bring me into the mind of the letter. My rating is only as low as it is because I am more impressed by N.T. Wright's works that detail the early church and the person of Jesus. I am largely in accord with the assessment of Wright in both cases. But in his more complete works he goes into far greater detail and the footnotes are quite helpful. i would love that detail in this book, but understand that this would defeat the intention of this series; accessibility, brevity, and colloquial understanding.

Just the series I have been waiting for!
This is such a useful series! Tom Wright has been described as the world's leading New Testament expert. Some of what he writes (using the name NT Wright) is technical stuff for academics and theology students but this series is quite different - its specifically written for everyone. And it delivers in a number of different ways:Tom Wright is really clear and easy to follow - no technical theological language which can be off-putting for the lay reader. He is a good writer! It does though reflect and draw on his expertise. As Wright puts it in his introduction: "Of course, it matters that some people give time and care to the historical evidence, the meaning of the original words (the early Christians wrote in Greek) and the exact and particular force of what different writers were saying about God, Jesus, the world and themselves. This series is based quite closely on that sort of work. But the point of it all is that the message can get out to everyone, especially to people who wouldn't normally read a book with footnotes and Greek words in it. That's the sort of person for whom these books are written."I found the books full of insights and stories which help to help you find things you might otherwise have missed in the text, or which present things a slightly different way. So its a very helpful series for the lay Christian who wants to hear the word of God speaking afresh. The layout, structure and presentation are excellent too. The books are paperback sized but printed on good paper with a decent font. Each section is about four pages long and generally there are 2, 3 or 4 sections for each New Testament chapter. So if, like me, you like to read some of the Bible everyday for between 10 and 30 minutes - this is very useful companion.

Enables everyone to have a better Biblical understanding of the passages
Tom Wright's commentaries were recommended by our Rural Dean. I use these commentaries in my sermon research and they are very helpful. The biblical text has been translated from the original Greek into modern day English, understandable by most people. The commentary on each text uses modern examples of incidents, places, people that any of us might come across or experience, to help understanding. The book can be used in personal Bible study and quiet time and/or for group activity and/or help in preparing talks and sermons. I highly recommend Tom Wrights 'Everyone' commentaries.

Good
Good book, although not life changing for me. I've had a lot of issues in my life at that time and was looking for help in various Christian literature; however, I have found little help if any. It's a good explanation of the gospel according to NT Wright, which is closer to the Early Church Fathers than all kind of Reformed teachings which started with Luther and Calvin and are now popularised by people like John Piper, Tim Keller and the like Gospel Coalition. It would have been better If I've just read the Bible.

Always
This book is the latest of Tom Wright's New Testament commentaries that I have read and it is up to the standards of the other books in this fascinating series. The Holy Spirit definitely draws closer to me when I am reading these commentaries. In this book the author talked about how Christians should make Jesus the centre of our thoughts about everything and this insight really hit home with me. He really should be with you every step of the way and he did say that he would be with us "always".
