The Cell: A Very Short Introduction
B**G
One of the best Brief Introductions so far
This book was full of lots of information in a well-organized format. It included scientific information from early cell discoveries to some of the most recent findings. The sections on cell structure include discoveries from the 1970s adn 1980s as well as more recent information. It would have been nice to have a few more pictures preferably in color. It would have been nice to have included a footnoted reference to the source research papers, but none of the other brief introduction books have had this. Nevertheless, using this book supplemented with information from Wikipedia and YouTube would enable almost any reader to become very knowledgable in cell microbiology.

Good overview of cellular function
Provides introduction to replication, transcription and translation. Shows how knowledge of cell mechanics plays into disease research. Look forward to revised edition which goes beyond 2010, since the field moves so fast some of the information is dated (eg, cloning which is much improved now and avoids "pre-mature" clone aging.

A Great Little Book
I really enjoyed this book. It is to the point and very informative. You can also feel the author's passion and fascination with the subject which is contagious. Although it is a small book but it packs a lot of information that would take a long time to learn from other resources. After reading this book, I started looking for more books on the subject.Awesome.

Inspiring
This book tops the list of "very short introductions." If the purpose of these wonderful books is to provoke fascination and interest in learning more, then The Cell has completely succeeded. I have taken an interest in microbiology in my early retirement, and this nugget filled in many gaps in my ignorance and explained the mechanics of life. It represents the kind of learning that makes me chuckle -- like an explosion of pop rocks in the brain.

The Cell fits the Bill
Although, on occasion, the language got a bit technical it was not beyond comprehension. In fact, the thought provoking qualities it provided for someone of my capabilities was indeed refreshing and educational.

Perhaps my favourite of the Very Short Introductions.
Perhaps my favourite of the Very Short Introductions. The book is well set-out, explained well (except sometimes I would have preferred more diagrams) and introduces many extremely interesting topics about the nature of the cell (coming from a background of only GCSE biology). It acheives its implicit purpose of truly making people wonder about the efficiency and complexity of the units of biology which we might take for granted. The book has enough challenge and a satisfying learning curve that, by the end of it, you'll want to go and read it again.Strongly recommended if you are at all curious about what you might take for granted within biology.
