Works just fine. 1 was difficult to open up at first
Some reviewers noted they had a difficult time getting it to fully extend or collapse. I bought 2 of these, 1 worked fine out of the box and the other would not fully extend. Without the other working part it would have been difficult for me to determine which part to twist to get it to fully extend. Almost took a pair of vice grips to the wrong end without the working unit to look at! It is not the ring closest to the paddle, but the one closest to the handle (in my case), or the middle ring (possibly in your case). Righty tighty lefty loosy applies to these. Hold the blue collar ring with one hand and twist correspondingly with the other at the handle.

Gets stuck, can't get the handle back in
I have a waterbike, and got this paddle to take with me for situations where I get stuck in shallow water. It happened today and I used the paddle for the first time. It extended fine, and I got out of the shallow water. However I was unable to get the telescoping handle to go back into the paddle. I don't have much room on the bike, but I managed to get the paddle lashed to the bike for the return trip.I got this paddle for its compactness, but if you can't get the handle back in, it looses the benefit of being small. I brought it home, and even with a large pair of pliers, it was difficult to get the handle back in. Overall, this paddle is ok, sort of. But I plan to replace it with one with a larger paddle section (this one is very small, so it doesn't do as good a job at paddling as one with a larger paddle surface), and hopefully one that will telescope back down to it's compact, retracted size.

Nice paddle for a junior paddler.
We bought this for our 5 year old to use in our tandem kayak. He commands the ship from the front position, I bring up the rear. This paddle is perfect for this type of use: when fully extended, it's just the right size for him to reach into the water and paddle away. It's also small enough to stow away easily when his attention inevitably drifts. I will say that the price seems steep for what this is, so I did drop a star for that. I'd have shopped around more if we hadn't needed this quickly.

Just What We Needed
We needed a small paddle for our Sunfish sailboat. This one fits the bill perfectly, especially since it floats. I also like that it's compact, yet can be easily expanded to a greater length. Perfect!

Single use for emergency but not for intermittent kids use
Does what it needs to do. The twist lock mechanism is not the best but works if you are in a pinch. Set your expectations that this is a single emergency use so you won't be disappointed. Kids played with it and it started to wobble after a day and extension is questionable.

Not Bad
This was an alright paddle. It seemed pretty sturdy, but it was VERY difficult to extend all the way quickly and tended to get stuck. I needed something for a float trip that would be quicker to extend and compact. I ended up returning, but it was a good paddle if you didn’t need to use it in a hurry.

Perfect for kids, telescoping works very well
We purchased this paddle for our 3-years old son to use while kayaking with me. The adjustable lengths were perfect for our needs. The telescoping works very well - i was impressed with how easy it was and how strong they held together when tightened. Paddle was easy for my son to use and he loves it. I can see that this would also be perfect as an emergency boating paddle.

Great for the Canoe
Got this as a spare for our long canoe trips and for my young son to “help out”. Works great. As other people suggested, it may get stuck in the extended option. However, we found that when we turned it like a faucet it folded in. Not sure if that’s how to unlock the mechanism or not but the directions made no mention of that.
