It seems to be more complicated than necessary or than one I purchased earlier. The second one is to complicated to give as a gift, so am keeping it as It would cost more to send it back than it's worth.

The FIXKIT Non-contact Digital Infrared Thermometer is as depicted in the photos and described in the specifications of the sales promo.It is a generic product marketed under the FIXKIT brand. Has temperature reading range -58℉ ~ 1202℉ / -50℃～650℃.It has an ergonomic non-slip handle, smooth trigger action, well marked and easily accessible controls below the LCD screen. Readings can be in Fahrenheit or Celsius. The screen is well visible in sunlight or in the dark (just turn on backlight). The thermometer can be comfortably handled by any size hand. It is relatively lightweight at 5.13 oz/ 145.5 grams. It is powered by a 9V battery (provided). The thermometer has all the expected safety certifications; FDA, FCC, CE, ROHS approved. A red laser beam allows you to focus on the article and by a simply press of a button surface temperature will show within less than a second, from a safe distance.I tested the device by measuring the temperatures of grilled steaks, vegetables, soup on the stove and ice water - comparing it with an analog and a digital probe thermometers. The variation in temperature between the three was, on average, 6.5 F. between the analog and digital probes and 2.8 F. between the latter and the FIXKIT thermometer. Less variation when cold materials were tested.The provided user manual is in 5 different languages, including English. The user should read the manual before using the thermometer, to get the maximum use out of it. Always adjust for the emissivity of materials being examined, to obtain a correct temperature.Good quality material and workmanship. Performs as expected. Five stars for the price and that it does work. I use it to check around my house for air leaks. This is not a scientific instrument; it is a very useful tool for the average DIY person; it's not rugged, so some care is needed.

Works well, but temperatures really vary depending on how far away you are from the source. 6 inches, 12 inches, 3 feet all give different readings.
