Early Doom Drones
"Hands First Flower" is THE early entry into the down tuned heavy slow drone doom sweepstakes and a winner. Absolutely essential for the doom connoisseur.

This EP is too Sick
I've always been so torn when choosing a favorite out of the classic Melvins solo EP's. By a long shot it's most likely always gonna be Crover's. But then Buzzo's had the mind blowing song 'Annum', which almost outdoes the entire set. But recently I've had some time to relisten to the one I passed over. Which was one of the many from the Melvin's fallen bassist catalogue; Joe Preston. Many early fans claim he was their very best. (I still say Rutmanis slaughters all, but thats another argument). When i first heard it I was a bit turned off, just by the first track alone. We all hate that screaming child in the grocery store's voice fouled over that mind numbing muzak track that's playing above it. And Preston Utilizes it in his solo album! Actually it's a very inventive opener now that I think about it. Then with the killer horror movie death metal groove of 'Bricklebrit' equipped with some samples from Apocalypse Now and some of Preston's sickest Basslines. And the 23 minute 'Hands First Flower' a doom ridden plodding movement of one H E A V Y riff and it grows heavier and sprawls through some of the most evil atmospherics. It's kind of like waking up in an abandoned factory and not remembering a thing. That's when I really started to admire this album. Preston used the EP to his advantage to throw those early Melvins fans off or on to his unique sense of doom crunch riffing and sweet atmospheric ambience (bass and guitar). And if you notice today there are countless amounts of bands using film samples in their music. Wasn't to much of it going on in 1992Alreayd apparent it's the most diverse of the Three Ep's. It's kind of becoming my favorite but when i'm ripped and hear Crover's i'll always chnage my mind. All of the Melvin's albums are amazing, and this one is no exception. Just because theirs no Buzz and Dale Chemistry aboard doesn't make it a bad listen. Preston was a Melvin once too. And besides it's 500x better than anything KISS has released.(Sorry, I really hate them. Melvin's OWNED 'Going Blind'. That's their song now.)

Not Odd!
If you were to compare this record to the other two records in this series, King Buzzo and Dale Crover, it might stand out as a bit of an oddity and in some ways an inferior record. This is, however, a quintessential Joe Preston record. You can see the shape of things to come: the drum machine excess, the creepy samples, and the slow, dynamic low end drone that he's been perfecting ever since. Listen to what he's done with Earth, SunnO))), and even the first part of the Lysol album and then listen to the third track. The other two songs are reminiscent of Sperm Whale era thrones. This is Joe Preston doing what he does best and I'd like to give it five stars but, as an ep, it doesn't have much going for it beyond the third track. The shorter songs are good and fit in with the rest of the melvins and even early thrones catalog but they are short and in a way seem to compliment the longer track rather than stand on their own.

blown the F*** away!
The first time I heard the EPs was in this order: Buzzo,Crover then Preston. All three are essential for any fan but I have always loved how joe preston's ends with hands first flower it makes the whole set seem so epic and brooding. I have also love listening to them in different orders each combination can change the whole mood. Try Joe,Crover and buzzo to make for a comical lighter set. These three were my first experience with the Melvins so Naturally they are my favorites Along with Eggnog,Bullhead and Houdini I heard them around a year ago. If you have never heard the Melvins Beware they will take over your whole musical interest. I saw them last year in July in Knoxville Tn when they were on tour with Down and the show was absolutely amazing it Completely blew me away. Since January of this year I have aquired 9 Melvins CDs so far I can't stop buying them. They will change your life.

Joe Has Landed...
It's possible that Joe Preston was sent here from the far reaches of space by a higher life-form in order to conduct mind control experiments upon the unwitting human race. Master of sonic deconstruction he gives new meaning to the word heavy. Three planet swallowing songs await you on this CD. Screw H.A.A.R.P., we should worry about what Mr. Preston is doing to our brains.

another fine J.P release
Part of triplet set in which each member of The Melvins(circa 1992) writes and performs all material.Anyone familiar with Joe Preston's output both with his own one-man band Thrones and collaborative projects with other bands(Sunn O))) and Earth to name two) will have some idea what to expect: in a word-oddball.The first curiosity,'The eagle has landed', is a tinny sounding piece of easy listing a little like something you might hear while on hold, with the sound of a querrelous child over it;the effect is unsettling and strange, welcome to the world of Joe Preston - embrace the weird. An apposite opening gambit.Second track 'Bricklebrit'most resembles Preston's Thrones material: distorted bass riffs over an erratic beatbox with a few samples thrown in.A sterling rocker of a tune but at barely two minutes duration it's criminally short; leave 'em wanting more...Final cut 'Hands first flower' is a 23 minute sludgefest reminiscent of Sunn O))) or early Earth.Doom drenched riffing plus eerie percussive noises and ethereal howls: an exceptional and fitting denouement to the E.PA rum offering, maybe not for the casual Melvins fan,but a valuable addition to your collection if you like things a little more leftfield.

On Joes E. P. he took a bit ...
On Joes E.P. he took a bit more of an avant garde approach to his album as apposed to King Buzzo, and Crover. This album has everything that a Melvins fan should expect from the Melvins plus a little bit more. The E.P. opens with a song called "The eagle has landed," right away you get a feel for what the whole album has in store for you. Joe has a very creative way of combining samples and sound bites from the outside world and moulding and melting them into the hard hitting music that one would expect from a Melvins album. On this album Joe calls in the help of Salty Green who I think is just a pseudonym for Joe Preston. Hope this review was helpful.
