Yes, if you can reach the bag and slide the webbing back through the D rings. That is how the steps are lengthened. The product should be lengthened after each use so that the steps can put pressure on your leg the next time they are used so that the first step is vertical as is shown in the video at the bottom of the product listing.

Q: Would this work on canoe?

There would need to be a cleat or some way to attach it to the canoe; I think the tipping tendency of a canoe would make it quite difficult to climb aboard if you were alone but I cannot say it couldn’t be done. I will say that having a way to hold on even if you couldn’t climb aboard would certainly be better than not having something to hold on to. I remember (50 years ago) having to demonstrate boarding a floating canoe as one task towards a Boy Scout Canoe Merit Badge; I am pretty sure I couldn’t successfully demonstrate that maneuver now!
