Illustrated Workbook For Freedom from Your Inner Critic:: A Self Therapy Approch

Great and yet really culturally awful
The exercises are important, and I needed to do them... and the illustrations would probably be helpful if they weren't so culturally gross. I saw other reviews commenting on the illustrations, but no one mentioned that they are so problematic. The white skinned big-nosed guy dressed up like an ancient Egyptian with a whip as a version of the inner critic... I tried to just ignore that and deal with the cognitive dissonance of this being helpful yet having a problematic illustration, and then came the white-skinned ladies who become dressed up as Native American and Indian... It's just, why? This book was published in 2013. I assume it's trying to go for multicultural, but it's all wrong in that aspect. It would be nice if this was republished with illustrations that are not in poor taste and distracting at best, ignorant and offensive at worst.

poorly written, terrible graphics/images, assignments not worth the time reading more less contemplating
Very skimpy workbook of very few pages.Assignments were overly simplistic and almost insulting.Graphics were so child-like that I felt talked-down-to.

Excellent and Useful
This workbook is a fabulous complement to Self-Therapy for Your Inner Critic. It elucidates the main points of the book and provides well designed exercises to help integrate these concepts. I love the fact that you can open up to any page in the workbook and have an important idea reinforced. I work with groups of arthritis patients and I intend to use this in my work with them.Understanding the Inner Critic can help one do IFS work more effectively, and these books together provide an excellent format for this deeper understanding. I was enchanted by the illustrations, especially the concept of the flashlight that sheds the light of consciousness on the various parts. The book provides a number of different modalities for the user to work with the ideas.I was particularly heartened by the concept of the Inner Champion. It supports people to see that they can unburden and transform in a number of ways. I like the idea that it can mediate the impact of the Inner Critic, while there is also the Inner Mentor that can provide supportive guidance based on the kernel of truth in the criticism.

Wonderul way to work with transforming your inner world
I am impressed with how gracefully this workbook enables people to apply IFS concepts to themselves. People can easily identify how they protect themselves, what parts of themselves are being protected, the role of their inner critic, and how to self-nuture. Ms. Weiss has done a wonderful job of creating a clear, easily accessible, and safe way to contact deep inner truths. This is a practical tool for individuals who are trying to apply IFS to their own inner system, as well as for professionals whose clients or students ask "what can I read and what can I do outside of our time together." It is great for people of all ages who are just learning about their inner worlds. It helps them deal with the age-old question of "why am I the way I am" by normalizing how we operate and what to do about altering self-defeating behaviors. It is a must have waiting room book for every IFS therapist! Marla Silverman, Ph.D.

Inner work made clear
I was delighted to discover this workbook for Self Therapy for the Inner Critic. It makes so many of the basic concepts of IFS easily accessible. Each page explores and clarifies one concept, in a clear and efficient way. The questions and exercises really aid in deeper understanding, and the combination of illustrations and cognitive prompting works to stimulate and educate. I appreciated the sequencing and the flow of this workbook. It takes the student smoothly from one idea to the next, helping the integration of what can be complex material. I can easily see it being useful for a broad spectrum of IFS students, from adolescents and young adults to clients who are just learning to work with this model. I so appreciate that Bonnie and Jay have brought this important and powerful healing tool to the general public in such an accessible way.

A welcome addition to the IFS literature
This workbook is a companion to the book, Self Therapy for your Inner Critic. It is elegant in its simplicity and clarity. I am using it to teach basic IFS concepts and, more specifically, the Inner Critic concept, in my study groups and with clients. It clarifies the confusion surrounding these intrusive parts of ourselves enabling us to relate to and identify these facets of ourselves. This workbook makes the idea of gaining some distance from our Inner Critic and mining its gifts seem less daunting. Embracing this part of ourselves, rather than cowering from it, invites a sense of wholeness that leads to emotional health. The charming illustrations and clear exercises make for an easily digestible package.Bravo!

A great visual aid!
I really enjoyed reading this workbook and have used it with clients of all ages. Bonnie Weiss has done a masterful job of helping the reader understand the inner critic through thoughtful questions, charming pictorial ideas, and insightful concepts. There are different types of inner critics and they are carefully delineated here. Wonderful resource!
