Do you need a converter to switch from the US 110 watt to the 220 watt I am told that Italy has?

Check the power cords or bricks for your devices. Most these days say they have a range from 110 to 220 or 240. As long as they say that, you do not need a power converter. You only need the plug adapters, like this one. We brought 2 iPhones, an iPad, a laptop, an electric shaver, and a camera battery recharger -- all had that listing on the plug or power adapter or brick (110-220 or 110-240). As long as they are good up to 220 you are fine.

I have noticed that some people and websites state that Italy had plugs that have three round holes and some have only two holes -- Can anyone advise what is the standard? Will the two prong type plugs work in the three hole plugs (just will not have the third grounding plug?)

I just returned from a month in Italy. Most locations we stayed at had the three hole recepticals but those would accept the two prong adapters. I think it's similar to the US where three holes are grounded two are not. We had no problem using small items like iPhones , iPads, razors, etc. using the two plug adapters. However, we do carry a grounded surge protector just to be safe.
