Great Information
A great read with important information that's just not freely available in dealings with the medical fraternity. Dr Aseem Malhotra does wonderful work, particularly at this time.

Clear information for an enlightened decision on statins
I have a heart condition: blockage of the interventricular artery. Twice I was offered statins. I am still debating to take statins or not. I read a few books on heart disease and cholesterol. They were fairly dogmatic and strident. They offered you an answer before you could ask the question. In comparison, Dr Malhotra explains how statins work and what benefits heart patients can expect from them. He doesn't say whether it is good or bad for you. He gives you the tools to assess your own situation and to reach an enlightened decision. If I am offered statins again, I will be better prepared to discuss the benefits they can bring me.

Very thought provoking
Dr Aseem Malhotra does not pull his punches while writing about the medical community and the pharmaceutical industry. But that’s not all there is in the book. He has highlighted that lowering the LDL level to its lowest possible level using high doses of statin — which the Pharma companies and many doctors appear to support — is not a line of treatment supported by scientific research. He has referenced studies that show a LDL level of 139 is the optimum level in terms of mortality outlook. Most doctors would prescribe a statin to lower this. He has also pointed to studies that show that LDL is directly correlated with the immune system and so, in those above the age of 65, and hence susceptible to infections, higher levels of LDL correlates to fewer deaths. In the book he has repeatedly said that that the important ratio to measure risk is Triglycerides to HDL but has not really pointed to any research which supports this. That’s a surprising omission. His section on calcium scoring and CT scan of the heart as the best way to estimate long term risk is very interesting. Also his repeatedly pointing out that doctors must discuss the real benefits of statins and the risks associated with them with their patients before putting them on statin therapy is very useful as it comes from a doctor.Overall an honest and balanced book highlighting how lifestyle modifications are the best way to maintain and restore heart health. I passed on my copy of the book to my doctor who scolded me for being hesitant in taking statins.
