Superb Album From The Rastafarian Rebel
I've read reviews and read articles stating that this is one of the greatest Reggae albums of all time or a "must have" for Reggae fans. No, this one of the the best ALBUMS of all time period! Not just for Reggae fans but for MUSIC fans of all races, colors and creeds. Peter Tosh is truly an underrated genius, lost many times in the rather large shadow of his fellow Wailer, Bob Marley. However, Tosh was an artist who stood on his own merit and wrote some of the most profound songs ever recorded or heard.EQUAL RIGHTS was indeed a very high point for Peter and truly established him as someone who was here to stay. It's sometimes forgotten that this was just his sophomore effort as a solo artist and he nailed it big time with this one. I think this album may define who he was as both an artist and a person more than any other he recorded. You truly hear the complexities that made up the man who was, in many areas around the world, just as revered as the great Marley. As a matter of fact, I've read articles that many people in Africa and the U.S. associated with Tosh better than Marley due to Peter's militant stance against injustices. This album hits the ground running with a remake of his Wailer classic, "Get Up, Stand Up!" I love the groove laid down on this version more than even the original. It's got a nice rock steady feel and he takes his time to get the message across. "Downpressor Man" is a classic song of judgement and warning against those who oppress and misuse others. You couldn't have 2 songs that more defined Tosh than these, ever the Rebel and Rastafarian prophet, his messages are as consistent as they are powerful. The lyrical content on this album truly showcases this man's profound mental faculties, listen to the song "Apartheid" and allow the words of that song to speak to you. Remember, when this album was released in 1977, there were still wars of liberation going on all over the world but especially in Africa. The song, "African" and "I Am That I Am" are 2 fantastic songs about pride and belief in oneself and right to live and express themselves as they desire. But the crown jewel of the album is the title track, "Equal Rights' is lyrical mastery and is so very deep in it's message. The message, on the surface, may seem simple but when you truly meditate on it, you are knocked over by it's multilayered meanings.I love everything about this album and love listening to it regularly. Peter Tosh was truly an artist, prophet, warrior and defender of those oppressed. He talked the talk and more importantly walked the walk. He knew what it was to be wrongly accused, beaten, and jailed for his beliefs. He, like all The Wailers, were truly on the front lines and that, as well as their incredible music, is way they are so praised even unto this day.

Still so relevant…
So many great songs on this album. Sadly, so many of Tosh’s messages are still so relevant today.

No need for seconds.
The original album is good enough. No need for the additional takes/versions.

Everybody deserves equal rights and justice.
My best track in this fantastic album is 'Equal Rights and Justice'. I don't want no peace. I need Equal Rights and Justice. Afterall, what is good for Ceasar should be given to him...

The (even greater) follow up to"Legalize It"
No sophomore jinx for Peter in this 1977 release. He was at the top of his singing and songwriting games and this album contains no filler at all. That's right, every track bears close listening. In this writer's opinion, that puts it a cut above Peter's legendary solo debut, "Legalize It".Production values were top-notch, of course; there was a reason that, at the time, "that Kingston Sound" had achieved global recognition. Bear in mind that Randy's Studio was a preferred work space for legendary producer Lee "Scratch" Perry, and that the studio's house band, "Randy's All-Stars", included Aston "Family Man" Barrett and Sly Dunbar. In all, a must-have for any music lover. 5*

2011 Legacy Remaster
Not going to review the music. It's great. One of my favorites. Tosh was amazing. This Legacy Remaster is terrific. The remastering job is clean and makes a great sounding CD sound even better. No over-loudness compression issues here. The extra tracks are excellent and really are a welcome addition to the original tracks, although they do not have to polish the released tracks do (not surprising).Unlike other Legacy reissues, this does not come with the exterior slipcover. A minor quibble. This is a great place to start if you are just discovering Peter Tosh or if you are a huge fan and want an upgrade to a classic.

Peter Tosh Remembered!
I forgot how much I love Peter Tosh. Reggae music takes me back to college days. I'm certain if PT were around today he would be just as relevant as he was then! Reggae music makes me happy!

Was skeptical... No more.
I really didn't know if the extra record would be worth it or not. Have no fear. I listen to it more, now, than the great record its based off of. A classic. Well pressed. Well presented. When offered at a decent price... Buy it.
