Little One-Yard Wonders: Irresistible Clothes, Toys, and Accessories You Can Make for Babies and Kids
S**A
Strongly disappointing.
I have another book in the series, Fabric by Fabric One Yard Wonders, and enjoyed it, so I expected this book to be, well, better.First, for all that the subtitle is "Irresistible Clothes, Toys, and Accessories You Can Make for BABIES and KIDS", know that there are VERY few clothing patterns (21 patterns out of 101) and only TWO of the clothing patterns are for infants under 12 months. Even then, your kid is SOL for the first nine months of their life, and while you can make them either pants or shorts, they've no choice but to run around topless as far as this book is concerned. Well, there's an ugly sunbonnet you can make for them too, but no shirts. I will say, though, that the clothing patterns they do have are mostly very nice, though expectedly skewed toward girls: there is one shirt specifically aimed at boys, plus two more that are unisex, three unisex bottoms (pants, shorts, & overalls), a "li'l tykes set" for boys that's a too-bulky tie, belt, sun visor, and moccasins (I'll leave you to determine the least crazy part of that), a "poor boy cap" that is also bulky and ugly, and a tank top and underwear set. To be fair, though, the pants, shorts, and unisex tops all appear very useful, and there are a few other unisex accessories, like a monster towel. But if you only have boys, you're probably going to be a bit annoyed by how few of the clothing patterns you can use. Most of the infant projects are the sort of accessory that is perhaps engaging to make and something you'd probably be proud of yourself to give as a baby shower gift, but as far as being actually useful, they fall flat. For example, there's a pattern for a "car seat hot/cold pack" so you can warm up or cool down an infant bucket seat before use. Now, I'm not new to this kid thing. I've got six kids. I can honestly say I have never once, over the course of probably thousands of times I have buckled my child into their car seat, though to myself "If only I could preheat this seat!" (Or cool it down, for that matter, and I live in Texas.) There's one of those HEY LOOK AT ME I AM NURSING DISCREETLY covers, some crib rail covers that almost certainly don't meet modern safety guidelines, an impressively bad mobile featuring "poufy balls" that are circles of fabric sewn together pom-pom style with plenty of unfinished edges to fray and ugly back sides of fabric to look at, the sort of diaper stacker I've never known a single mother to actually use more than however long it takes to empty the first time (if that), and so on. If you want to make a pregnant woman smile thinly and thank you insincerely, there are plenty of patterns for you here. Now, I'll say there are plenty of novice projects here. And by novice I mean "still afraid of sewing other than in a straight line". Not knocking it; I've only sort of moved beyond that stage myself. The aforementioned diaper stacker is one of those patterns, as is the play yard sheet that doesn't even require a schematic to tell you how to lay out the pattern pieces, because there just aren't any. The crib rail is made up entirely of rectangles, as is the "Pajama Monster and Little Stuffie" (the bag is what seems to be a very inconvenient laundry bag), the placemat set very nearly is, as is the seat cushion and pocket.Oh, yes, the authors love themselves some pockets. And pillows. There are quite a few of each, and even a few of the two combined. They range from deceptively simple to fairly complex, which is appreciated if you really, really like pillows. There are also several toys, ranging from a rather alarmed-looking teddy bear to a quiet book that's a nice idea but not great execution, as that's the sort of thing that really, really benefits from not using the same exact patterned fabric throughout.Overall, it's...eh, kinda useful? My luckily-sized six-year-old daughter has found a few dresses she wants me to make her, and I've found a few tops I want to make her as well. My five-year-old boy is probably going to hate how many pairs of pants I'll make him just so I can get my money's worth. But if you are trying to decide between this and the Fabric by Fabric version of this book, go with the other one. It's much more useful.

I think just about anyone can find projects in this book they would like to make
Finally, a book with an actual assortment of projects. I think just about anyone can find projects in this book they would like to make. I've been sewing for many years professionally, while my daughter has only just started. We were both able to pick out projects from this book. There are a few simple projects where the author assumes you know the steps, so I wouldn't suggest that it's perfect for brand new beginners. However, if you've completed a few basic projects, this would be an awesome investment. I bought it used in new conditionand got it at an amazing deal. I'm considering ordering my mother one as well. There are a ton of gift projects that could be done in two hours or less, which is part of the appeal for me.

Borrowed from Library then Purchased my own copy
There aren't many craft books these days that you "need." Between Pinterest and other internet resources, you can find just about anything you want for free. And still, you might be able to find the contents of this book, but getting a pattern to print true to size is a pain, so this is well worth it. This is FULL of wonderful patterns. Most books I flip through have a couple of cute things and then the rest is "meh." This book is one great item after another. I can't say enough good things about what this book w/patterns has to offer.

Awesome book!
This book is incredible. My daughter is 14 months old and I can find literally dozens of things in here that I can make for her right now, and dozens more that I'll make once she's bigger! I love the way the book is laid out, the clear pictures, and the simple instructions. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a book to get them started sewing for a little person!

The Best!!
I love the one yard wonders books! There are so many great projects in here for anyone with little ones around. From basics, like sheets and undies, to more complicated projects like tops with shirring and stuffed toys, even a playhouse, there is something for everyone and every ability level. I have already made several of the projects in this book and will definitely be making more! I can't wait to see what the next one yard wonder is!
