Journey Around Philadelphia from A to Z

A quirky and problematic alphabet book
This is a strange alphabet book because the author makes weird associations between letters and objects. For example, Quakers are listed under "b" (for brotherhood) instead of Q. The main word for "k" is "kettle" but there is no kettle in the main picture on that page. "D" is about a city-wide mural project because of "dignity". "S" for the Schulykill River was perhaps the most straightforward page. The pictures are great, and perhaps an older child would enjoy the more abstract associations in the book. But as an introduction to the city (for, say, a grandson who has just moved there!), it was iffy at best.

Best Book about Philly!
This is the perfect book to introduce children to Philly. We used it as a guide book and visited many of the places we read about. Beautiful illustrations.

Too young for a 3rd grader.
Description says for Grades 1-6. The book is way too young for anyone over Grade 2. It is basically a picture book. Very disappointed!

Excellent, Beautiful Book
I found this book today in the Drexel University Bookstore of all places. What a lucky find!Yes, this is a children's book, but it is fit for children of all ages - particularly those with a connection to the city of Philadelphia. It is an A-Z book, but it is also so much more - a mini travel guide of sites and history with tidbits of great information.I particularly enjoyed the front and back page illustrations of many things associated with the area that wouldn't fit into the text of the book. A great opportuity to expand your child's knowledge about the area. The illustrations are beautiful. I would happily purchase a print of the eagle rowing on the Schuylkill River for my brother who spent untold hours there both in high school and in college. The highlights of the city as well as gems of the surrounding area are succintly, yet wonderully covered. It includes entries for the some of the oldest and most revered sites as well as some recent additions to the Philly scene. This is a book that your child will be able to enjoy for several years - not several minutes.I will be purchasing many more copies of this book - it's truly fabulous!

Delightful tour of the City of Brotherly Love & Sisterly Affection
I found this book attractive in its succint style and artwork. Both young and old--especially visitors and newcomers to Philly--would benefit from its reading. I plan to pass it onto my nephew interning in the city this summer.
