Reading, Writing, and Talk: Inclusive Teaching Strategies for Diverse Learners, K–2 (Language and Literacy Series)

This is a very good information regarding the teaching system.
I did private tutoring for years, this book is telling u the same things I've known for years. Mostly I tutor math but what works for math works for all subjects.I've corrected tests for 6th graders on the federal tests; they do not give a true picture of what kids know. And I went into the public school system to tutor, 6th graders and because they are very strict about how u tutor and there is a lot of the kids didn't learn anything. And often I had to ask the teachers for the answer. They are teaching calculus to 6th graders and these kids never learned how to count their change. I guess u are suppose to learn that in pre=school now. And the tests weren't used to find out what kids knew. If they all flunked the tests we still went on to harder subject matter even if everybody flunked. Kids should get free college they are not learning anything in school; it's a babysitting system today. Yes I recommend this book. Maybe kids will graduate finally with some useful knowledge.

Definitely a valuable source to all educators to have!
This book describes what it means to be genuinely inclusive in a classroom. Although it is focused on K-2, the experiences and the discussions are so important and up-to-date that they can be expanded throughout all educational levels. Being aware of culturally relevant teaching may be one of the most important things for today’s educators. The world is diverse, and the authors beautifully show us how diversities offer us teachers precious learning opportunities, not only for young children, but also for all of us. The book invites us to critically think about strategies that genuinely welcome all types of diversity; in languages, in cultures, in reading, in writing, and in all ways of communicating with the world. Mariana Souto-Manning’s and Jessica Martell’s book contributes immensely to rethinking education in a much more purposeful way. The authors offer an approach that centers on children, without isolating them from the whole environment around them. I would say that they offer a culturally-relevant, contextualized, and child-centered approach, which makes a lot of sense, as people learn by interacting with the world around them. “Reading, writing and talk” itself is an excellent example of learning through interaction. This is a book that makes us think critically about our own practices. At the same time, it offers a whole range of tools and strategies to help us envision inclusive and culturally relevant ways of teaching. Definitely a valuable source to all educators to have!

As a future Early Childhood Educator, this book has ...
As a future Early Childhood Educator, this book has truly helped me develop my identity as a literacy teacher! When I hopefully have my very own Kindergarten classroom in New York City, I will feel confident teaching my diverse learners about literacy by implementing the various literacy structures and ideas from this book. I will continue to use this book as a tool to make sure that each and every one of my students is feeling valued and respected by reflecting their home cultures into my classroom. Thank you Mariana Souto-Manning and Jessica Martell for putting together a resource that is explicit, concise and that will positively impact my future students as they embark on their literacy journey.
