Beautiful, true story of a powerful woman who should ...
Beautiful, true story of a powerful woman who should be a role model for us all. It teaches a powerful lesson about the importance of protecting our environment, standing up for what you believe in the face of adversity, and creating a community that works together to make the world a better place. There are so few children's books set in African countries, and what's great about this one is that is tells the story of the brilliance and bravery of a Kenyan woman who helped her own country. It's a story of Kenyan resilience, strength, brilliance, and independence and presents a Kenya that seeks change from within rather than relying on the typical trope of stories set in Africa that represent Westerners as heroes and Africans as helpless. Every child should read this book.

Inspiring story of an African woman changing the world
I love this book. It is a children's story to change the world. I love the illustrations and simplicity of the telling. Its a great size and quality feeling book, perfect for a great and exciting present. I have given a couple of copies away already. I love being able to read a story of a Kenyan woman fighting for peace and her environment to my children. What an inspiring story to inspire my children.I have another version of this story, Mama Miti: Wangari Maathai and the Trees of Kenya Hardcover by Professor of Linguistics Donna Jo Napoli (Author), Kadir Nelson (Illustrator). This, Napoli version, is a more poetically written telling of the story with exquisite illustrations and a musical refrain which I have found the children really enjoy repeating. The Winter's version is more reasonably priced than the Napoli one, which is quite expensive.
