A decent little underdog movie
Tim Hunter did a fine job directing this. It's not quite as good as Tex, another, similar Hunter directed movie. But it's a good underdog-comes-outta-nowhere-to-compete-in-the-thing-against-all-odds movie. It' s rated PG which means there are a few curse words here and there and the fairly mild attempted rape scene which has some brief nudity. This is not a Disney movie. It has some authentic, real-life scenes and dialog in it. The story is simple, the characters are likeable. It stays on course to arrive at the predictable but satisfying conclusion. Gilbert takes a logical next step from Little House. Farnsworth is his folksy self as always. The rest of the cast is good. The 2 little boys do a fine job. Pederson plays a jerk while still projecting a realistic character. Interesting to see Arlis Howard in a bit part a few years before Full Metal Jacket. I also loved the southwest Texas scenery. The Big Bend area of Texas is ruggedly beautiful.

10 Stars!
I had to speak out in defense of this movie: In regards to the viewers criticizing the rating and the content of this film--I get what you're saying, but this film handles some difficult subject matter in a way that's very true to life, and perhaps the film could be used as an opportunity for discussion as opposed to simply being banned from viewing by kids? I was a kid when I first watched this movie. I loved it. I rented it from the video store at least once per month. As an adult, I was ecstatic to find it on DVD. Melissa Gilbert's "Charlie" is the ultimate underdog--she's trying to raise her two little brothers on her own; she's bullied at work by a male co-worker, and she's found a horse who (like her) doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the cow pokes. What makes this film more than the average horse movie is the depth of Charlie's character and the fact that the film is willing to tackle quite a bit more subject matter than just the typical mindless "girl and her horse" story. If I could give the movie more than 5 stars, I would!

Great movie
My Dad is the auctioneer in this movie. So now that he is gone, I get to hear his voice again!

Oldie but Goodie
1. This should be rated PG-13 due to sexual content & language2. I first saw this movie in the early 1990s when my 3-day eventing trainer showed to us, ever since then I have continued a passion for the sport. I probably have seen almost every horse movie out there and this one for the most part seems to hit the nail on the head with the riding portions, the movie also touched base on the steeplechase portion that is no longer used in eventing today. Some of the story line is cheesy but you get an appreciation of the hard work that is needed to ride in the horse sport. I give it two thumbs up. The filming locations were spot on for this movie. Oldie but goodie.

Life-like story, but sad and well ending
Sylvester is an enjoyable story except for the swearing, Mr.Foster(the stockyard boss)drinking, and the rough co-worker but that is life sometimes.
