Will this work with a Kwickset brand Smartkey key?

yes, or at least a couple of years ago it did.... nice to have one key. actually, I bought the kwickset locks from home depot....the salesperson was quite knowledgeable

Do I need insert one key permanent to open for the other side?

This is a security deadbolt. It is keyed on both sides. on the SECURITY side, if someone broke your window, they can't open the dead bolt because you need a key to move the lock(deadbolt). If you have a solid door and no window near the door, you can leave a key in the INSIDE lock. If you have windows in the door or next to it, you need to remove the key and place it out of reach but near the door. Consider emergency escape in case there is a fire in your house. If there is a lot of smoke, you may not be able to SEE to find the key on the table or in a drawer to unlock the bolt. THINK THIS PURCHASE VERY CAREFULLY. It is a strong lock and it has its purpose. It may or may not work for your needs.

How do I tell if the deadbolt is able to replace my current one?

Must deadbolts are easily replaced. When you remove the previous one, you are left with a 2 1/2" hole that can be used to install this one

Is this set one or two?

ONE SET (KEY ENTRY ON OUTSIDE OF DOOR AND TURN KNOB ON INSIDE OF DOOR). THIS TYPE OF LOCK IS GENERALLY USED ON DOORS WITHOUT GLASS (GLASS COULD BE SMASHED/BROKEN AND COULD REACH IN AND UNLOCK DOOR)
