Sams Teach Yourself Regular Expressions in 10 Minutes

Let's state it first, as the author points out, this is not an in depth review of the mechanisms that go on behind the scenes, this will get you on top of 99% of what you'll ever find out there.This book covers expressions extensively and more than any tutorial you'll find on the internet, it's just more than enough if you don't mind the how it does that, you just want the job done. For every kind of expression there are three pages with examples and explanation. I advice fiddling with Regexr during the process.Invaluable.I usually don't leave many reviews there are plenty of resources for whatever project you are up to, but delivering this much in the little effort of few hours is outstanding.

One of several books I read on the subject.Although I am only an amateur computer user, I find regular expressions essential to edit text copied from the web or other sources using TextSoap or other apps.

I was actually quite sceptical about this book for two reasons: 1. The title is a lie. 2. I'm not used to reading "quick learning" books. So I bought the book because I was quite disappointed by other book about regex which was much more bulky. I gave it 5 stars because it gave me everything I expected from such little book about the subject - a short but good introduction and unveiling the magic regex runes - everything I needed at this stage. Therefore highly recommended.

After a few books, some of them really famous, I found that this books is the best I've ever read, is compact,direct, easy/practical examples, it has info/content/explanations enough to make it easy to read and quick. The book go to teach how to use everything about regular expressions as fast as possible, and the result is really good.

Although I'm not a native English speaker, this book was very easy to read. And finally after years (before reading the book) I got to know this useful tool.

Good little starter book which can be read in a day. Gets you onto the first rung of the regex ladder.

Perfect book to get straight into examples and quickly teach you without over providing over complex examples.

On the author's own website he says, "This title is out of date, and has been replaced by Learning Regular Expressions." Why has Amazon not mentioned this in the listing?Not only is it 'out of date', it's full of mistakes. There is a page on the author's own website (which can be found easily by Googling forta books 0672325667 errata) that lists 30 of them. THIRTY! With Regular Expressions it's vital to be precise. Putting a + rather than a * (which will make the expression fail to do what it is supposed to) is unforgivable in a beginner's book. How can beginners learn if their teaching material is wrong?What makes this even worse is that the book was digitally printed on demand. That is, they print it off for you when you order it. That means there is a digital copy somewhere on Amazon's servers. The errata exists. Why are they printing and delivering a book that's full of mistakes when all the mistakes could be quickly edited and corrected?I would return it for a refund but I have written in the book now (mostly with the errata!) and so I doubt they'd take it back.My only question now is ... can I trust Ben Forta to have proof-read his more recent book? Do I risk buying it or will that be full of errors too? Maybe I'll Google for its errata page first!

A basic but exhaustive lesson on regular expressions. Well developed and explained, useful as daily guide to use. Only limited at time of aplying to diverse languages. But at this time, you have the required to get directions on your own.

Usually I never like titles like "learn something in 10 minutes" But this is an exception. The contents are excellent for refreshing and very quick reference regular expressions, its well written, and too easy to understand.

Regular Expressions are incredibly powerful text parsing tools. But as with almost everything, using the tools regularly is essential to maintaining and building proficiency. Of course, there are ways to work around that and this is one of them. Not only is the book an extremely good introduction to Regular Expressions and the Regular Expressions Language, but it is also very helpful as a very quick refresher course. Forta intends his book to be an introduction to Regular Expressions. In fact - and this shows you the nature of the man - Forta suggests another book from another publisher (Friedl's "Mastering Regular Expressions) to those who want more information. In ten chapters, Forta walks the reader through the basics of understanding what Regular Expressions are, how they can be used and how to use them. Overall, this is a great introduction to Regular Expressions, their user and how to forumulate them. Excellent for your first introduction or for refreshing the skills of the infrequent user.Jerry
