and a beacon of hope for any who despair of finding a way out⏤either for themselves or for a loved one.
An extraordinary story of fall and redemption by one who passed through 23 years of heroin addiction and "lived to tell the tale." The author is a gifted writer and draws a vivid picture of his life, which took him through the underground culture of the 1960s, the long arc of descent into addiction, and the steep climb out through the use of the African entheogen, ibogaine. A must read for anyone who has lived through or is living with the pain of addiction, and a beacon of hope for any who despair of finding a way out⏤either for themselves or for a loved one.

Probably the most insightful and best written book on this subject to date
An very well written book. The author gives a very clear account of his experience of heroin addiction and his many failed attempts to quit. He writes in such a way that it is almost possible for an outsider to get some understanding of the day to day awfulness of trying to exist with the addiction and the impossibility of escape. He describes how a single experience with the powerful African 'drug' Ibogaine finally gave him a major head start in coming off heroin. It was not a 'magic bullet' but a huge initial push in the right direction, and needed to be followed by many years of effort to stay clean. The spiritual aspect is the author's own subjective assessment of events in his own reality, which is also interesting . Probably the most insightful and best written book on this subject to date.
