great book for a trip to South Africa
We went on safari in South Africa and took this with us. Really well done and easy to spot and find animals in here. Great field guide.

A well written Guide Full of Information, with Excellent Photos.. NOTE UPDATED edition 2015 is even better.,
I have both is version and the UPDATED version from 2015.The 2015 version has all the features the Stuart's are well known for. It is fuller. The pictures are excellent and at least to me there seems to be more if them-- hard to say how much more but enough to really please me.Title"Stuart's Feild guide toMammals of Southern Africa including Angola, Zambia and Malawi "Authors as above. It is well worth considering.I have reviewed it.I bought the Kindle version of this book.I am viewing it on an IPad with a Retinal Screen. The Mammals are grouped by Families-- the zoological Name is Given but examples of the Common Name are Given. This gives quick ascess to the informationThe text is fairly full. It covers identification, and details about the animal, whether they live in groups etc etcThere is a location map for where each animal is foundOften the animal is shown next to a full grown human to give you an idea of how high it stands of the ground.Footprints are given where available with a scale in mmHorn development by age are shown for Wildebeest and some AntelopeThe photos are excellent. Some species only get one one , others moreThere is cross referencing in the text which takes you to the referenced spot.I have learned a lot from looking through the book-- at present I am trying to get the various Antelope and related species into my head , so that I can identify them, and fit the right information to each groupHighly recommended

Good coverage, but Kindle version is hard to use.
I'm not an expert on mammals, and certainly not African mammals, but anything you need to look up should be in this book. However, to go from looking at, say, a genet to an antelope requires a lot of page flipping, which made me long for an old-fashioned paper copy. Many e-field guides have a table of contents that allows you to go from one section to another without much trouble - not this one.

Detailed, helpful, a bit dry
this is not a narrative with lots of television style nature gee whiz stuff, but it is practical, thorough, and seems to me accurate, with enough interesting detail to keep me coming back to it, to familiarize myself with what I might see on a trip to southern Africa. it is handy to have a field guide in my kindle, no extra weight to take it along.

Mammals of Southern Africa
An excellent overview of the animals of southern Africa. Each animal had a fantastic descriptive photograph which showed the distinguishing features of the animal. Each mammal identified had a written description outlining specific identification and imformation areas. This was most helpful as it standardised the availability of sought information.Anyone travelling to South Africa - this reference book is a must, especially if you are interested in these unique and magnificient creatures.

Super book
Could have 5 stars if animal foot prints were given as a table for easy comparison. My son loved it and read about the animals as we were on safari and in the evening.

good reference manual
our ranger used this to identify animals on safari in South Africa. It is very comprehensive and more accurate than some of the smaller works

Best mammal guide to South Africa
Superb book with first class descriptions and excellent photographs. I have travelled extensively through Africa and this is the guide I turn to every time. It goes much further than most guide books describing behaviour and other interesting facts about each mammal. Do not go to Southern Africa without taking this book.
