1961 Newport Set

I do not think the recording was goid enough. The music is very good as always. But I do not think extra addition was not good enough to be added.

Another live recording of the Best saxophone player ever. Love it.

Collected tons of weird, obscure bootleg Coltrane material in the mid-00s so I'm always surprised when something like this pops up that I've never heard. In the context of Coltrane bootlegs, this is about a C, maybe good for people who like the mellower-but-still-improvisitory sound of Coltrane's early quartet. Any fan of Coltrane's live performances knows he kept re-working "Impressions" and "My Favorite Things" into monstrous existential dirges right till the end--compared to that, these are definitely the more pleasant, jaunty, melodic versions, even compared to the Raga-infused "Village Vanguard" sets from '61.I don't even see a track listing here--it's "Impressions," "Naima," "My Favorite Things," (Newport '61) then "Blue Train," "I Want to Talk about You," "Impressions," "My Favorite Things." (European tour w/ Eric Dolphy.) The Newport set has better sound quality. I believe the second set is included in the "Live Trane" box set which I purchased years ago.The general sound of the Newport material is very similar to the Live Trane 1961 European tour material, generally, only without Dolphy. There are no face-melting Coltrane brilliancies, really, although "My Favorite Things" is always more or less revelatory (I'm comparing it to dozens of versions I've heard, so my standards are pretty high.) McCoy Tyner (piano) was young, and definitely got better throughout the 60s, so this is some of his weakest work. Coltrane does some of that great fast-run sax tenor playing on the "Impressions" versions (as opposed to the slower sound of say "Chasin' the Trane"-style.)Nothing wrong with it, but nothing to moisten your trousers, really, even if you're a Coltrane collector. The Newport '61 stuff is not a bad sampling of Coltrane's early quartet on stage (there's no official Impulse! record that corresponds to it, really,) but the European set is such bad sound quality it's for completists only (who might already own Live Trane box.)

収録曲と時間は以下の通り。1 Announcement 1:242 Impressions 6:233 Naima 4:174 My favorite things 16:275 Blue Train 9:286 I want to talk about you 7:187 Impressions 21:048 My favorite things 21:041〜4 が６１年７月１日ニューポート、5〜8が同年１１月２２日ヘルシンキでのライヴ。このうちニューポートについてpreviously unissuedと記されているが、「新・コルトレーンを聴け」にそのステージのことが記され、so whatで始まりますというアナウンスを含めその通りの演奏がこのCDで聴ける。ということはこのニューポートのパートは過去に何らかの形で入手可能に なっていたわけだから、previously unissuedとは言えないと思う。録音はモノでコルトレーンのサックスはよく捉えられているが、ベースとドラムの音は良くない。６３年ニューポートの 音質を想像してはダメ。2や4の比較的短い演奏時間が示すようにこれらの曲のライヴの初期の姿がわかるのが特徴。ベースはレジ―・ワークマンとアート・デ イビスの２人。演奏内容はエリック・ドルフィーが参加したヘルシンキの方が遥かにスリリング。天衣無縫のサックスとフルートは聴きもの。 ドルフィーのソロになると途端に空間がゆがむとしか形容できない。しかし音質はニューポートのパートよりさらに劣悪。音がこもってしまって歯がゆいことこ の上ない。This is the first time this set is presented in the correct pitch.というのが正しいならこの音でも改善されていることになる。ドルフィーを帯同した６１年ヨーロッパ・ツァーではストックホルム・ライヴのレ コードの音が良かった。このヘルシンキ・ライヴの音質は比べ物にならない。

1961年、Miles Davisの元から巣立ち、いよいよ自己の信じる音楽の道をひたすら突き進むJohn Coltrane(当時35歳)のドキュメンタリーです。音質はともかく、John Coltraneの未発表録音なら聴いておきたいというファンのためにリリースされたような作品。厳密には、過去に日の目を見た音源のようですが、コンスタントに入手できない状況にあっては、やはり貴重な作品であると思います。さて、1961 Newport Setというタイトルに偽りはありませんが、それは前半の４曲までで、後半はStockholmでの記録らしく、音質も異なります(落ちてます)。メンバーは、Newport(1961.7.1)が、John Coltrane (ss, ts)、McCoy Tyner (p) 、Art DavisとReggie Workman (b)、Elvin Jones (d) 。ベースの音はモコモコしているので、２人で演奏しているとは感じられません。しかし、及第点の音質だと思います。Stockholm(1961.11.23)が、John Coltrane (ss, ts)、Eric Dolphy (as, bcl, fl) 、McCoy Tyner (p)、Reggie Workman (b)、Elvin Jones (d)。音質は、たまに聴くなら許せるレベル。音質のことより、同じようなセット曲目を、その日の心持でどのように演奏するのか、といったところに興味を惹かれます。そして、Eric Dolphyに対するJohn Coltraneの眼差しも感じ取るべき記録なのだと思います。
