Released through Real Gone by arrangement with ABKCO Records, this twofer features two of the most collectible albums in the entire Maynard Ferguson catalog, the two records he recorded in 1963 for the Cameo label in between his stints at the Roulette and Mainstream labels. Maynard still has his great Roulette band of Lanny Morgan, Willie Maiden, Frank Vicari, Mike Abene, Ronnie Cuber and master arranger Don Sebesky et al. with him on these recordings. Sourced from the original master tapes, this marks the first time these rare gems will be legitimately released on CD. Both albums feature driving big band arrangements of both standards and originals, and we have unearthed an unreleased bonus track from the New Sounds sessions, a take on the classic The Song Is You, exclusively for this reissue. Remastered straight from the original tapes with new liner notes Maynard s complete Cameo recordings!

You know you want it!
It's not often that I search for Maynard recordings that I don't have. I suppose the fact that he's been gone for 5 1/2 years makes me think I've heard everything already. So why did I type "Maynard Ferguson" into the Amazon.com search box a few weeks ago? Not sure. But wow, I'm thrilled that I did!I was in junior high school when I first heard Maynard's music and saw him on his New Vintage tour. It didn't matter to me that "disco sucks", 'cause Maynard + disco was still Maynard. His mid-70s to early-80s albums were always my favorites, and I have to admit that I didn't always appreciate his earlier works nearly as much. Now that I'm a lot older, tracks like the ones on this CD appeal to me so much more than they used to. Yes, I've still got his 70s & 80s stuff thanks to them coming out on CD, and I'll never stop liking those songs. But thanks to this recording, which, as the other reviewer has indicated, is of excellent quality, I'm learning to enjoy a lot more of Maynard's earlier works than I did before. If you're considering buying this CD, then unless you're absolutely opposed to hearing any of Maynard's earlier works, you won't be disappointed when you hear it!

FINALLY, a proper release of these recordings
For over five years, the only way to obtain Maynard's two Cameo LP recordings, outside of buying used vinyl copies, was to get the Fresh Sound CD release from France. While a valiant effort on the part of that label, it pales in comparison to this officially licensed release from REAL GONE MUSIC. From the first few bars of the first track, it is obvious that the original master tapes were used for this release, as opposed to a super clean and de-noised vinyl copy that I am guessing Fresh Sound used. This is most evident with the clear high end brass sounds and the splashy cymbal work. It makes the older release sound like you are hearing it through gauze. Without a doubt, this is the edition to own. Heck, it even has a newly found bonus track! If you're a Maynard fan or a fan of electric big band jazz, you need to get this one.

Love Jazz!
I first saw Maynard Ferguson in 1959 in Lansing, Michigan, and fell in love with his music. If you've never heard his trumpet, you must get an album by Maynard Ferguson. And just to make you jealous, I also saw at the same jazz 1959 concert Dave Brubeck's trio with Paul Desmond and they played "Take Five."

Maynard!
Maynard Ferguson was the best! Since the complete 10 disc set is not being made anymore, these smaller sets are welcome. I have many of his albums passed down from my Father and these two are among the best. I would really like to see more albums offered like Straightaway and the Maynard 61--- Maynard 62---Maynard 63 and Maynard 64. If you are listening---we NEED these albums! This CD is well worth the money and will be greatly enjoyed! Buy it now before these disappear!

Another reissue on CD of the great Maynard
I'm a long time fan of MF, and I was enough lucky to see him in concert on June 2000 in Roma, Italy.I always loved his great skill on trumpet and his musical philosophy. So I get on touch any time a new record is released. This is a compilation of his two great masterpieces of the 60s for the Cameo records, and Maynard plays, as usual, at his best. The digital restoration has made of this compilation a brand new joy for my ears.Great!!!
