How did these women bravely make these decisions?
I'm in the process of decolonizing my library. I am embracing the discomfort of learning from BIPOC voices and uncomfortably deal with the history I was never taught. This book contains amazing stories I never heard of who bravely followed Jesus during Jim Crow--and did amazing things. This is such a hopeful read. That during one of our ugliest times in history, these women didn't stay small but just followed Jesus. How did they do that?

Felt Seen
As a white woman, I didn't expect to feel so seen in this book but I really appreciated that Jasmine made it a point to focus on also representing the single women and the childless/childfree women. It was really encouraging to read about each of these women's testimonies and would love more books like this.

Fresh perspective from a black female theologian
Very informative felt like I was reading a mini encyclopedia. As a woman of color I was interested in the topic. Author is an African American woman who acknowledged being minority in theological literature because its dominated by white male writers. Identified 10 African American unpopular women that did God’s calling during 1800s and 1900s when racism was severe. I liked how she emphasized how these women did God’s calling outside of the standard belief of being married with children

A Must Read!
I expected to meander through this book over the next few weeks but I was so gripped, I read it cover to cover in less than 24 hours! That is a rare thing for me! I found myself so thirsty to know about these amazing women and also inspired at Jasmine's honest account and sharing of what she found about them from primary resources. Her approach is disarming to the skeptical, and honestly, I felt like I had just had a great enlightening conversation with a good friend. I can't recommend this book enough. I'm off to read all of her books now!

Lesser known stories of church history
Wonderful book. Jasmine Holmes is a gifted author. I love to study the lesser known parts of history and sociology and this fits that perfectly. It has the added benefit of being a God-glorifying and personally inspiring work. Now I do not just know a little more about these 10 women but am challenged to follow their examples in service. It has also opened up many good conversations about modern church culture (and how we got here) and I am recommending it to many friends and family to continue those conversations. Worth a read for anyone who is interested in American church history and theology.

beautifully inspiring
I am so grateful to the author for opening up my biography loving mind to these 10 women! This book, which mostly offers summarizations and the author’s personal reflection on these unique woman, has become a perfect platform to jump into much more research. I have already begun to read Amanda Berry Smith’s autobiography and Frances Harper’s novels looking forward to much more edification from these ladies due of Mrs. Holmes inspiring introductions.

Sisters who shone for God's glory. Famous in the courts of the King
Brilliant journey into voices that shout from the past. Fascinating and convicting set of historical profiles. Great starting point for going to find more to read on these women who still shine for His glory. Thank you jasmine for introducing this far removed Scottish reader to sisters in the faith
