Stealthy with Excellent Picture
If you have a BMW F10 (or several other models listed in the description), this is likely the dash cam that you want. As a result of a recent accident, my goal with this purchase was to be able to prove the erratic behavor of other drivers around me. This product will absolutey accompish that.TL;DRI installed this product on a my 2014 BMW 535i F10. The camera unit easily replaces the stock mirror mount housing to make the camera look like a factory feature on the car. You can find it if you know what to look for, but it's unlikely that this unit would be confiscated after an accident or law enforcement contact. It provides a low-power WiFi hotspot that is used to communicate with a smartphone app, and the microSD card is field serviceable so you can preserve the camera contents quickly if necessary. There are buttons on the driver's side of the housing that let you turn the unit on or off, take a still picture, and turn the microphone on or off (and thus the sound on the video). The same side has very discreet status LEDs. The opposite side has a slot for access to the microSD card. There is a single camera that records through the windshield. The recordings are 1080p by default, though you can pick a lower resolution if you need to record longer on the same size microSD card. The still pictures can be as large as 12MP. Because the camera has a very wide field of view (170 deg) there is a little bit of fish-eye-type image distortion, but it's not bad. Also, I personally prefer to see a wide angle than to be able to read license plates way ahead of me at night. This camera can be a little tricky to mount. I've done it several times as I used it for a while before I decided to write the review. The first time was more difficult becuase of the lack of real instructions, or any photographs with the particulars. Once you sort out the mechanics that hold the camera in place it is very easy to do, but you've still got to be patient. It's just slightly harder to remove and replace than the stock mirror mount housing -- and it's totally worth it. The pictures accompanying this review should make this a non-issue.Just like every other Chinese dash cam, this one uses the RORO CAM app. While it's free and completely adequate for my purposes, the feature set feels limited. For example, you can download video and stills to your iPhone, but then they're trapped in the app -- there's no way to get them to your camera roll to share or upload them. This is NOT a failing of the camera, but of the free app to which you are directed. If I need to copy video from the camera, I just copy it from the SD card. There may be other apps that will work with this camera, but I have not tried any.I initially had a problem where the camera video was upside down. Support provided me with a firmware upgrade for the camera that was easy to apply and fixed the issue.SPECIAL NOTE:Some of the pictures in my review reflect that I hard-wired this camera to my car. This product comes with a wiring harness that connects to an ODB2 port, which is under the driver's side of the dash. I purchased a separate harness specifically designed to hard-wire the camera, which I used to connect it to the fuse box that is located behind the glove box. All of the wiring strategy in the pictures will still work for for an ODB connection, you just have to go the opposite direction (toward the driver's side, rather than the passenger's side). Note that my BMW was built in Germany for export to the US, so it is left-hand drive (normal for North America). Adust the polarity of this paragraph if you live somewhere else. :)
