Thermalid II is a unique product that is installed over your attic stairs. This product provides an R-9 insulation value and has a magnetic gasket that seals the homeowners conditioned air (warmed in winter and cooled in summer) in their home. This magnetic seal is the same type gasket that you have on your refrigerator. Stopping the air from moving in and out of your house through the attic stair opening saves the homeowner money by reducing their utility bill. Without a seal the air simply goes around anything you use no matter the R-value of the product. (Tech talk: The differential pressure in the home and the attic changes all the time due to heat/cooling of the attic, barometric pressure, wind velocity outside the home, etc... so the R-value is not as important as sealing the attic opening.) The Thermalid II seals the entire opening not just the stair frame. Outside measurements 32"x 60"x 11". The attic cover is magnetically sealed with four metal strips that are caulked to the attic floor (use any type Latex caulk, not supplied). These strips are provided and are 1/16" thick and 1" wide and are cut to length. This allows the Thermalid II to be easily removed out of the way when entering the attic with nothing to trip over or climb through. The Thermalid II is made of 2 1/4" thick expanded poly-styrene and comes in two pieces for lower shipping cost. The two pieces are connected together by a special "lap joint" created when the product is professionally manufactured. Installing the Thermalid II will take about 1 hour. Stopping air movement requires more than setting a product on top of the stairs. Thermalid II fits both 22” x 54” and 25” x 54” openings. Homeowners should measure the height stairs extend above the floor of attic when closed to ensure clearance. We believe that the Thermalid II provides the homeowner the best product to stop drafts through your attic stairs. Please make sure that the height of the stairs will fit under the Lid.

Quality, Price and Exterior dimensions
I was unable to use the Attic Stair Insulating Cover, because it is to large to fit between normal rafters in older homes. Also I considered the quality of the item to be poor and substantially overpriced. The item cost is $89.00, and I estimate the value at about $19, and consider it a throw away item. While the interior dimensions were stated, the exterior size was not. I now have a piece of trash on my hands for disposal.
