Iron Dog 70016 Tape Clip Tape Measure Holder with 3-Pockets

UPDATE: Please see additional comments following my initial review...Generally, this product is a very clever concept, and if were made to last would be a very good item. It has the potential to make using and carrying a tape measure far more convenient. As many who use a tape measure on a regular basis know, it can be annoying to continuously struggle to clip a tape measure to your belt- fighting with it to slide over the belt, but not grab the waistband of your pants. When that fails, some try clipping the tape over the front pocket of the jeans. Works more easily, but soon the pocket shows severe wear and tear. NOT a good option either.This product solves this problem nicely. The belt clip needs to be attached to your belt only once. The tape measure can be attached relatively easily to the metal clip; MUCH more easily than struggling to make the connection to your belt time and time again with the tape measure itself. The holder also has a small `main pocket' which allows a small tool to be carried. I secure a razor knife or wire stripper in this pocket. There are also two other very small pockets that have room for a pencil or two- and that's about all.So... what's the beef? Seems like it does what it's designed to do. Well, that is true. The complaint is that after only a couple months of use, and NOT every day- maybe 2-3 days a week- it is already beginning to fail! The rivet that secures the clip to the material is beginning to pull through the material. Once it pulls through, the metal clip will be useless. It is possible that I may be able to make a repair by adding a metal backing plate of some kind inside the pocket and reattach the metal clip using a larger rivet or something. However, the point is that I feel the quality of the item is very disappointing. If it weren't past the 30-day rule for returning items to Amazon, I'd be sending it back for a credit.It is rated 3 stars because it *IS* a useful product. Just a shame that we are expected to purchase junk from China that is so poorly manufactured that its useful life is so ridiculously short. In the future I will attempt to buy from more reputable manufacturers. As this product does fill a need, I'd like to recommend it. But with such poor manufacturing I cannot.UPDATED COMMENTS: I need to give a BIG acknowledgment to the manufacturer. Iron Dog stepped up and replaced the tape measure holder. This is the kind of customer service that should be commonplace instead of a pleasant surprise. Because Iron Dog stood behind their product, I have given the rating another star... (up from 3 to 4). And, if the replacement product is able to remain intact for a reasonable time, then the product deserves FIVE stars. Only time will tell about this issue though.UPDATE: Nov 22, 2013--After using the replacement product for more than 2 years, I can absolutely state that the first one I received must have been some kind of manufacturing anomaly. The replacement product has worked flawlessly.Oh, one more thing... I must retract my statement about "junk from China". No, I'm not saying that there isn't WAY too much poorly manufactured junk from China being forced on the market. I stand behind THAT statement. What I have learned is that Iron Dog does NOT manufacture this item in China, and therefore I was incorrect in that assumption. And, as long as I'm correcting my incorrect assumptions, my characterization of Iron Dog was too harsh. They have shown me that they DO stand behind their products, and I feel the ARE a reputable manufacturer.Since Iron Dog did stand behind their product, I would definitely recommend this tape measure holder. It really is a clever concept and fills a need nicely. I am very pleased to have it back in use.

Clip is very poorly built. I had to pay a shoe repair shop to install a different one that I scavenged off of another tool holder. Definitely needs re-design

The Iron Dog line is very well made and seems durable, but I've only owned the products for a couple months. The extra pockets on this holder are convenient for pencils, longer drill bits, and even a utility knife easily fits in the larger of the three pockets. Unfortunately, the clip is too "open" and does not keep my tape measure in place. You might want to try the tape measure pouch instead.

I purchased two of these. One was plastic and not metal. The other was metal, not black, but bare metal. It was also poorly manufactured. It was installed UPSIDE DOWN making it very difficult, if not impossible to use with a large tape measure like Dewalt, or M1. The Fatmax is easier to use with this. I am very disappointed in Iron Dog. I will be contacting them directly.Update:Iron Dog has replaced my tape measure holder with their current one. The metal one is the old one. They wanted to know who I bought it from, because the metal is the old model. The plastic one is way better. However I still prefer the Dewalt, Because it holds more tools. I only wish it worked on an Iron Dog tool rig, because that is way better than any DeWalt tool belt ever made.

Ok. so about 9 months of use out of this thing and its still working awesome. this thing is tough, I work masonry and this thing is holding up pretty darn good. The Tape measure clip is tough. i pull my tape out and replace it over 500 times a day AT LEAST. still holding up. The pockets have become a little loose but that's not an issue at all. This pouch will last me years. its Tough and durable. even if it did break or come apart some how, id order a new one. it works great for me. I love it.

great product and they sent me a free hammer loop too. The one I got has the plastic clip and it works well with a 16' or 25' and holds a sharpie, pencils, and maybe a low profile utility knife but not mine.

well made with a sturdy tape clip .. should help the jeans to wear out before the pocket does

Great tool that is easy to slip on and off. It is small enough that it does not get in the way. The tape almost always stays in the holder
